Treat Spots: San Francisco

• 19 February 2008

During our recent three-day trip to San Francisco, I made it my mission to visit every delectable "treat spot"--some were new to me and some were old haunts. You could say I have a real penchant for treats--good ones. We grabbed sweets at Citizen Cake, Kara's Cupcakes, Recchuiti Chocolate, Tango Gelato, Tartine Bakery, Bi-Rite Creamery, the Boulange on Pine, XOX Truffles, and finally Miette.

First introduced to this adorable confectionary at the Ferry Building, I was happy to find its quiet (translation: less touristy) sister store in Hayes Valley. Yuh-uh-mmy. A bonified candy store, Miette offers every flavor (the good ones) of Jelly Belly jelly beans, the rare Smurf gummies (one of the employees made it her mission to stock these), and all the little traditional American candies you'd ever wish for...ever! The store itself is beautiful inside and out. I don't love candy myself but it was a great stop for Easter basket goodies--things I probably won't find on a local level. If you are looking for Miette's hand-crafted cakes, you'll have to visit the Ferry Building location. Darn.
Not so much a candy girl? Just a half a block down from the must-see Rose & Radish is Citizen Cake. Get your sweet fix there with a Retro Tropical Shag. Also worth checking out while in the neighborhood of Hayes Valley are the myriad of local childrens' (and grownup!) boutiques. The Boulange on the corner is a great lunch/brunch stop as well. If the kiddies need a break from cruisin' the neighborhood, let them release some energy on the new play structure across the street.

P.S. It's amazing I've never had a cavity with a habit like this! Thanks Mom for those good genes :)
