stephmodo: Organizing Tip #15

Organizing Tip #15

• 01 August 2008

Before heading out-of-town, change the sheets on your bed (and make it too!)
.

My friend Tamara shared this tip with me last year and I've been following through ever since. She mentioned how much it made her feel like she was returning to a hotel. And you know what? She is completely right! I do feel better slipping my tired body into a clean bed {and a clean house if I can swing it} after a long day of traveling.

A note regarding sheets: If you want a luxurious sheet set, but aren't in love with the luxurious price tag that often comes with these sets, try looking at TJMaxx/Homegoods. I've never paid more than $50 for a 600 TC sheet set there. And, while we are on the subject of thread count, let's talk about that a little bit too :) I've learned (by trial and error unfortunately) that one must buy 600 thread count or higher to avoid wrinkled sheets (I don't iron). Not 400, not even 500. 600 is the magic number apparently. Perhaps you will have a different experience but this has been mine~

Recap

#1 Make your bed each day
#2 Clean out your closet (take out everything not worn in past 12 months)
#3 Clear off kitchen counter tops (remove anything you don't use 2x weekly)
#4 Clean out your car
#5 Unclutter your mind--start writing thoughts down right away to relieve stress
#6
Find ways to organize in one minute or less (purse, drawer, etc.)
#7
Place a pretty dish on dresser tops and nightstands to collect jewelry, loose change, and pocket paraphernalia.
#8 Gather up recipes and clipped magazine pages and throw them all into one accessible binder for easy meal-organizing.
#9
Sort mail immediately...preferably over the trash :)
#10 Clean out your car weekly
# 11 Do a 5-minute nightly sweep
#12
Take just a few minutes to walk through your home with a garbage bag, gathering all the unused items you can.
# 13
Replace all your random plastic and metal hangers with wood hangers for a unified look in your closet.
#14 Simple ways to remember important things to do while you are out--Put objects that need to leave the room or house with you near the door or on the driver's seat of your car; Post a sticky note on the door leading to your car (be it the front door or garage door); Post a sticky note on the dashboard of your car as a reminder.

  1. Good tip! I love TJ Maxx, but it's hard to get to one from DC without heading way out into Virginia. When do you guys leave? I want to connect before you do if possible. We'll be in the UK the 13-24th!

  2. I found a set of 1000 TC sheets at Sam's club of all places, they had them in stock for the holidays but were a bit pricey ($120) for my budget, I found some in their "clearance" section just a few months ago for $39! They are really the best sheets I've ever owned.

  3. I love these tips! I always sort the mail over the trash can and most of it ends up in there! It makes such a difference to not have a stack of papers sitting on the counter.

  4. I agree! I try to have the apartment as clean as possible before leaving for a vacation. It's always such a treat to return to a clean home!...and easier to transition into daily life again.

    Love the tips!
