This is pretty much my favorite album for entertaining...ever! We've enjoyed hitting "repeat" on this baby for about a decade. I have very fond memories of playing it frequently in our very first apartment in San Francisco...
Funny enough, we never tire of listening to Getz/Gilberto. It totally makes me want to jump on a play to Brazil, go to a jazz club, and drink a Brazilian Lemonade by the beach :) Another Brazilian favorite is Samba Blim, (also by Verve) a gift from my music-savvy sister Kristen. She found it at a used cd store and what a find! I really need to hit those types of stores more often--iTunes is great but obviously doesn't provide the same experience.
That being said, I am in the market for something new, something to add to my favorites. What are your favorite albums for entertaining? Think "classic dinner party" with no particular theme.
Ooh, what a great album. I love "Desafinado." I was lucky to be introduced to the three of them in my Latin American Pop class in college. You might try Dave Brubeck. I never tire of this cd. That plus any Frank Sinatra cd are my standards.
ReplyDeleteFrank Sinatra and Tony Bennett are always appropriate, but Linda Ronstad had an album, "Whats New", years ago that contained sort of piano torch songs, slow, romantic. I still think it is lovely and not just for a dinner for 2.
ReplyDeleteoh, getz and gilberto is one of our favorites too. we are also big miles davis fans.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had the chance to have a dinner party in our new house yet, but I listened to Coltrane's "Giant Steps" twice through last night while cooking. And I love, love, love Tony Bennett's "I Wanna Be Around", which I have on vinyl and could listen to endlessly. Also the soundtrack to Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil is a lovely collection of Johnny Mercer songs and Sarah Vaughan singing Gershwin is something I constantly go back to.
ReplyDeleteI've gotta comment on this one. The Getz/Gilberto CD is as close to real-life magic as it gets. In college even before stephmodo and I joined forces I would listen to this cd and it evoked the deepest sense of relaxation I've ever had from listening to music.. no joke.. I've never experienced anything like it from any other music or CD. This is my all time favorite relax and chill Music!
ReplyDeleteThis particular Getz/Gilberto album is my ALL TIME FAVORITE cd. I too discovered it in college and have loved it ever since.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see you guys enjoy it too.
Gilberto's daughter, Bebel Gilberto also has some great CDs out.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to listen to these. I love the "Something's Gotta Give" Soundtrack. My roommate and I love to put that on when we throw al fresco dinner parties.
ReplyDeleteHey, you might want to check out Marisa Monte's album "Universo ao Meu Redor."
ReplyDeletePink Martini's "Sympathique," definitely.
ReplyDeleteOh! Also I recently discovered Caracol's wonderful "L'arbre aux parfums," that might work as well.
ReplyDeleteMmmm...Brazilian jazz, delicious! Have you listened to Astrud Gilberto? (I think she is/was Joao's wife.) So yummy.
ReplyDeletemadeleine peyroux - half the perfect world CD is our go-to 'music for entertaining'.
ReplyDeleteJust bought it on itunes! Thanks for the recommendation--it was just what I was looking for for the weekend. And many thanks for the lovely blog.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite CDs! I think I listen to it at least once everyday!
