What to do in New York: Reader Favorites

• 03 November 2009

We enjoyed a fabulous little weekend in New York last month, largely due to all of your wonderful recommendations! Thank you all for taking the time, on a Saturday nonetheless, to share your ideas and tips about what is not-to-be-missed in New York City. We've visited a handful of times already, but given the size of New York, it's so easy to visit 10 or 20 times and do different things each trip. This we've learned!

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to compile a "top 20" list based on your recommendations, including links. I'll start at the top with the most popular place/restaurant/site and then move down from there. Enjoy and thank you again for all of this fantastic information...all of you who contributed seriously saved the rest of us hours of research!

1. Central Park (fountains, sailboats, museum, rollerskating, etc.)
2. Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge
3. Cloisters Museum
4. High Line Park
5. Levain Bakery
6. Grimaldi's (eat here after walking to Brooklyn over the bridge)
7. Cafe Habana (Cuban sandwich + street corn)
8. Crumbs
9. the Met
10. Caracas Arepa Bar
11. Shake Shack
12. Alice's Tea Cup
13. Butter Lane Cupcakes
14. Staten Island Ferry
15. Magnolia Bakery
16. Jacques Torres Chocolate
17. Burger Joint
18. Clinton Street Baking Co. (for pancakes)
19. Rice to Riches
20. the MoMA or "The Modern"

  2. Love this list. Wish I'd had it when I lived in the area. . . I'm flattered that my suggestion of the Staten Island Ferry made the cut. It was one of those things that we'd take the kids to do when we had "nothing going on" but needed an adventure.

  3. My 3 year old and I just returned from a week in NYC visiting friends. Central Park (amazing this time of year), Crumbs, and the Shake Shack (highly recommend the Black and White shake=Heaven)were some of our destinations. I love your list, however, for my next visit!

  5. Any recommendations on where to stay? We are planning a trip in the spring. Don't want to spend a fortune, but want a nice place from which to explore the city. Thanks!

  6. 12 out of 20! I'll have to add the other 8 to my list for future visits to NYC.

  8. Anyone who comes into Butter Lane and mentions they saw us on your blog gets two for one cupcakes Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays through the month of February. (Limit two per day.) At the end of the month, the blogger with the most mentions wins a dozen cupcakes!

  10. There is also one other place that I would add to it. I LOVE NY and if I could live there I would. It's called the Cafeteria
    http://www.cafeteriagroup.com/

It's open 24/7. It also located around several small music venues. Perfect place to go after a great night of music.

The Pizza place, Grimaldi's, is to die for. My friend and I got lost in Brooklyn and found it right before we walked across the bridge.
