Eat Me: Satsumas

• 16 February 2011

During my bi-monthly run to Whole foods, I spotted these gorgeous, fragrant satsuma oranges near the entrance. Initially, I decided to pick up a couple on a purely superficial basis--I liked they way they looked with their leaves still attached! However, their good looks didn't last long once my husband discovered their delicious taste; and I just had to let you know, in case you too have been eyeing them wondering if they're worth the slightly higher ticket price. I think by now you know the answer to that question :) {try one!}

  5. We use to consume these as if our life depended on them. Too bad you can't get them her the east coast. There is something similar here, but not the same.

  6. You will only see them during the chinese new year as they symbolize good luck with the leaves still attached, they are usually for display first.

  8. Okay, so interesting... I'm just back from a business trip to Milan. Found time to visit a local supermarket. (of course! thought of you... ) Their large produce department had a good 20' frontage (really!) of different types of oranges, clementines, mandarins, et al. ALL with leaves. Many with twigs and/or dirt. NONE with the washed & polish gleam that's a USA-standard. A whole different type of fresh-picked presentation. ;-)

  9. Carrie: I have no idea where they came from beyond Whole Foods...sorry! Somewhere in CA though--just not exactly sure where.

    Likes Chocolate: Move West. :)

    Christine/CMN: A business trip to Milan? I want to work for your company! Or at least accompany you next time. I love markets in Italy!
