stephmodo: Shep Studio

Shep Studio

• 15 September 2011

When we lived in San Francisco, I knew gals who would fly to Utah to get their hair cut and colored.  Back then I thought it rather comical, but I later came to understand why they did what they did.  While I was getting my hair chopped off in the Haight and very frustrated with all the hair stylist breakups I was having, my friends came back from Utah looking gorgeous...and for pennies mind you.

Once we moved to Utah I did a lot of research and the name "Shep Studio" repeatedly came up.  I decided to give it a go, despite the hour drive each way, and quickly became hooked.  It's a fantastic salon in every sense and their newly-renovated space makes the experience that much better.  I've made appointments with both Patrick and Stephanie and have always been happy with my haircuts.  Shep, the salon owner, is also amazing I'm sure; but since he's usually booked several weeks out, I've never had the pleasure of sitting in his chair.  If you're good at planning ahead, you should try and calendar in an appointment and then let me know how it goes...:)

p.s. photographer Justin Hackworth snapped some images of Shep Studio stylist Patrick awhile back...you can peek at them here

  1. shep cut my hair nine and a half years ago, a few weeks before i got married. a friend of mine in one of my classes at byu always had the best looking hair, so i asked her where she got it cut, and she recommended shep. it was the best haircut i ever had, and hopefully someday i'll be able to get down there again to get another one from him!

  3. Hey Steph if you don't want to commute to SLC to get you hair done, my brother's partner is an AMAZING hair stylist in SEATTLE!!! He's been written up in Allure magazine as well as Seattle mag a couple times. Email me if you are interested because he also see's clients at home.

  4. funny, i was just talking about this salon with my provo friend the other day. she went there to get the haircut she wanted, then had cheaper upkeep cuts at paul mitchell school because she just asked them to keep the shape and just trim.

  6. Oh boy I'm loving your stories about Shep and his salon. Here's another fun fact: my best friend from Ohio growing up was his upstairs neighbor 15 year ago when we were in college.

Also, it turns out another friend from college went to Shep for haircuts back then as well. Totally forgot that until now. Random!!!

  7. I guess we all have Shep stories. Before Shep Studio he and my cousin Annika worked together and I remember them coming to CA and visiting at my parent's house. She now owns her own place downtown SLC, Aerolab. But I'm in Utah county, I should give them a try.

  8. This cracks me up because I grew up across the street from Patrick. He was a cute little kid and now he's a famous stylist! His mom taught me piano lessons and he's good friends with my sis. Pat is awesome.

  9. I am so grateful to Shep. I went to him over 10 years ago to get my wig cut. (I have Alopecia. Many stylists won't cut wigs--even human hair ones, like I have.) The stakes are high cutting a wig: Once it's done, there's no growing it out. Shep is a true artist. I am so happy (although not surprised) to see that he's so successful. Thanks for sharing.

  10. I went to Shep over 10 years ago as well when my friend worked there. I told him I was just there for a trim since I was trying to grow my hair out (from the short Meg Ryan 'do I had back in the day). He took a look at my long, straight hair, raised his eyebrows and said, "Grow your hair out to what?". I looked at my hair and realized - oh, my hair is actually quite long now - when did that happen? It was finally time for a change! Without him to wake me up, may hair might have been down to my knees before I knew it. :)

  12. My life changed the day I found Shep. I have super curly hair and he cuts it amazing every time.(it's a hard task to find a stylist who can cut curly hair) I've been going to him for a couple of years now. My mom who lives in ALASKA also only goes to Shep...that's how great he is!!!
