stephmodo: The Field House

The Field House

• 13 October 2011

Perhaps one of the most carefully curated boutiques I've ever come across sits right here in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood.  It's called The Field House and it's a dedicated space for guys--specifically the kind that likes to hang around the outdoors-y, eclectic and food lovin' Pacific Northwest.  The story behind the shop is actually quite moving and nods to the Depression Era when the owner's grandmother Mable visited her local "Field House" to take classes and to make crafts that inspired and shaped the rest of her life.

Like an art exhibit, the store changes its appearance frequently, so chances are when you stop by, it won't look like this anymore.  Although I hope they at least keep the old timey soda pop bar, {this is where it starts feeling like a general store!}.  I've got to get my husband in for one of their root beers :)  Also, the easy-going staff is always friendly and helpful, but never pushy...an approach that's always appreciated.  Please note that if you try phoning, the call may go through to their sister store, Blackbird.

  1. Love it ~ thanks for sharing. Any store inspired by a Mable has to be special.

  2. I saw the post title & thought it would be about the Eugene Field House in St. Louis. I haven't been to the poet's house-turned-toy-museum since a Brownie trip in elementary school. This Field House somehow evokes the same nostalgic feel.

  4. I love The Field House! And it's my husband's favorite shop ever. He said if he had to buy clothes from one shop for the rest of his life, it would be from there. :) We "discovered" it and the whole Ballard neighborhood a couple of years ago when we were staying with friends and in town for a craft show. Just reminds me how great Seattle is... I'd love to get back there sometime.
