stephmodo: How to Enlarge Photos on Your Blog

How to Enlarge Photos on Your Blog

• 03 July 2008

While there is many a witty writer in the blogosphere whom I love, admittedly it's the pictures that I find most alluring...especially large-format photos like those at Black Eiffel. Perhaps I'm only speaking for myself, but I guess I'm a girl who requires visual aids :) This sentiment especially applies to design-related photos. I love to view all those itty bitty details.

I recently discovered how to enlarge blog photos (thanks to Rachel and some internet searching). It's so nice to not have to squint anymore. And the best part? It takes seconds to enlarge your photos on Blogger. Seconds. Not minutes. Seconds. We all have time for that!

Here is what you do:

Go to the "Edit Html" screen when you are ready to create a "New Post":

...then find the section of code that looks like this:

...change "s400" to "s640"...

...then click "Save Now" and head to the "Compose" screen. You should see your photos enlarged. When you click on "View Blog", you will see a noticeable difference in the size of your photos. All those cute pictures of your projects, your children, your home, etc. will look all the better!

A couple of notes:

1. If your html says "s200" instead of "s400" then change the size of your photos to "s400" to start. See how you like it and then upgrade to "s640" if desired.

2. You will most likely have to change the parameters of your blog (and blog banner) to accompany the larger photos. Changing your "outer wrapper" to say 900 or 1000 should do it. Also change the size of your "main wrapper" to about 700.

Good luck!

  2. Ditto on the awesome! I had just been wondering how to adjust the margins of the page (now I know they're "wrappers"), so I just made the changes, and I'm so happy! Thanks! :)

  8. I have been wondering this exact thing. You're awesome! Thanks for sharing.

  9. Kristin Jo, I'm not sure if you can do that in blogger. BUT, if you upload pictures to a flickr account, then use the BigHugeLabs Mosaic Maker (you can link it to Flickr easily--they walk you through it), you can make a mosaic with two pictures...or ten. You pick. It's a great tool. Then upload the mosaic to your blog and go into the html and change the size of the mosaic the same way you change the size of the photo indicated in this post. Good luck!

  10. Ooooh - I like it. This blog is getting techy! ;)

Maybe this is obvious, but I should point out that if your picture is not at least as big as the resolution you're trying to set it at, it will look grainy and ugly. If it's out of your camera, then you'll be fine. Beware if you're stealing pictures off the web. Just an FYI.

  15. So is this something that needs to be done each time I upload images to my blog? Can I upload my images in html and then switch it to compose mode so I can see which images go where according to my journaling? I've been so frustrated that people can't click on my images to enlarge them.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Kristen,

Yes, it is something that needs to be done each time. Luckily, it doesn't take long though. Write your post in "compose" mode, then switch to "html" mode and change the size of your pictures. Head back to "compose" and make adjustments if any are needed. Hope that helps!

  19. I am looking for help and ran across your suggestion. I am still having trouble. My html code says: 300-h I change this to no avail. At times I am given the pixel hight and width change option. This enlarges the photo, but they become more grainy.

I was also curious if you knew why blogger will sometimes not allow one to click on a posted photo to enlarge it. It seems rather random as to when it embeds the link so the photo can be viewed larger.

Thank you so much for your help.

  20. Jessie & Chelsea, I am not familiar with that bit o' code. I'm wondering if you have a different version of blogger than I do...I think there are two versions. I'm sorry I can't help you more...good luck!

  21. Okay, I know you are not in the business of technical support, but I tried to make my photos bigger, and changed everything which I shouldn't have and now my three columns have moved to be on top of each other. I noticed you have three columns and managed to still have large photos....any advice? Thank you and I love your blog!
