Several years ago we visited the lakeside (and very picturesque) town of Annecy, France. We walked through an outdoor food market and discovered a vendor selling homemade herb mixes and spices. I purchased a small bag, but after tasting them on roasted potatoes back home, I wished I'd bought an entire pound. The taste far surpassed anything found in the States.
When I discovered a similar vendor at the outdoor market in Sarlat, I vowed to never have those same regrets again. I bought enough to last me another seven years...I hope! Here are a few pictures showing just a few of her delicious spices and other related dried fruits, mushrooms & locally grown nuts. My version of heaven :)
Be very careful with spices & herbs, (fruits. veg, dairy and meat products esp) coming through agriculture into the USA - more often than not it will be confiscated, particularly if it is not sealed. But not declaring and getting caught with it can also pose a risk of a heavy fine. Sorry - this is the realist who has been stung too often. Good luck with it - the spices sound DIVINE!
