Framing Wallpaper

• 25 March 2009

I love the wallpaper movement going on right now, but have a difficult time wanting to commit, even with all the amazing designs out there. This hesitation is likely due to the memories I have of my parents installing and removing wallpaper themselves, albeit a few decades ago. It wasn't pretty...is it ever?!. I realize papers are easier to install these days, but still I'm skeptical I could pull it off nicely.

However, I LOVE the idea of framing wallpaper...it's simple enough for someone like me who isn't super crafty, but unique enough to have that "wow" factor. I'm seriously contemplating this project. I may have to pay a visit to locally-owned Walls.

You can find more clever uses for wallpaper over at House Beautiful.

My mom is an EXPERT at putting up wallpaper. I can't even tell you how many times we tore down/reapplied as a kid. The smell of the vinegar in the spray bottle and feel of my fingernails being worked 'til they were raw....ugh. I don't know if I could ever do wallpaper again. But framing it? That's genius.

great idea! I went the less expensive route and framed nice wrapping papers from the same color families for my daughters room. it's a great way to pay homage to all the wonderful patterns out there that usually get all ripped up when they're used for their origional purpose!

I'm liking this idea. Having just come off a major wallpaper removal project (including from the ceiling!) I don't think I'll ever bring myself to wallpaper an actual wall, even though I've seen some great designs lately.

That's a great idea! I have seen so many pretty wallpapers, but I could never commit to it, plus I'm sure it is a lot of work to put up. Hanging a picture is super easy!

I've totally thoght of this, but usually the smallest amount it's sold in is 2 rolls. And that's almost $100 or something.

I wish I could just get a sample or something for this....

Maybe someone knows something I don't?

Love this idea and have done it myself :-) Two years ago I ordered a bunch of samples from Farrow & Ball (lovely!) and then framed nine of them. Square, silver frames, with wide mats, from Ikea. Hung them up 3x3 on the wall above my bed. Love em, one of my favorite diy projects. Just bought a new, higher headboard, and had to take down the frames as they no longer fit. Am thinking of moving them to the entry hall.... So for the other posters, look for samples (Farrow & Ball's are nice, because they're about 8x11"). Love the idea of using decorative or scrapbooking paper, too!

I love this idea but I'm tempted to just tear out a page in a wallpaper book. I don't think the store would appreciate that much.

Lovely blog.

What I great idea! My father used to be a wallpaper hanger, so I always grew up with tons of old sample books to use in craft projects. This project makes me wish I still had them! I'll be putting up a link to this project in my blog later today.
