stephmodo: Quote of the Day

Quote of the Day

• 20 April 2009

The Husband passed this quote along to me this week...I really, really love it. What a beautiful reminder. Admittedly though, I just added several more things to my ongoing to-do/to-become list; namely, "be a better mother", which we all know does not happen overnight.

"Your toddler will do what they need to do, and not necessarily what you say. If you're patient, then they will be patient. If you speak gently, then they will be gentle. Whatever you want them to be, you have to start becoming."

-Helen Hunt

  6. You know, I think that MIGHT be true for SOME kids, but I also think that each child has a lot to do with how they react to the world. In many cases that is probably true, but I've seen too many variations in temperament and personality to believe that 100%. Sometimes we don't mirror what we see around us, sometimes we act against it. And if there's "too much" kindness, might we try to take advantage of that kindness, rather than echo that kindness?

Not only that, but that philosophy is then putting a whole lot of weight on the parents for who their kids turn out to be-- and taking away much agency from the child.

I really do think that becoming a human being is far too complex a journey to sum up in just one quote or philosophy.

  16. I just read this on another blog and it spoke volumes to me. I know I will not be the sole contributor to who my child becomes as a person but I will play some part and I always hope to make that part honest and true and kind and loving. Thank you for posting this.
