Lodging in the Big Apple

• 01 July 2009

We are heading to New York this Autumn for a friend's wedding and I'm curious if any of you have any advice regarding hip, stylish & reasonably-priced accommodations (do those three adjectives exist in the same sentence in NY?) In the past we've always stayed with this soon-to-be-married friend, but obviously the weekend of her marriage it's not appropriate. So, before I grab something on Priceline, does anyone have any tips or advice? I'd love to try something different and non-chain if possible. Thanks in advance!

Lovely photo by dreamy Simple Takes--fun photography, great prices.

  1. I'd check Craigslist, as there are a lot of people who will rent out their apartments nightly for reasonable rates, like the family M and I found in Northampton. Unlike our situation, though, the people typically rent it out when they are out of town, and the apartment is vacant.

  2. We stayed at a very charming and quaint hotel in the city a few months back. It was the Franklin Hotel and I loved it! I would forewarn you though that the rooms are tiny (but we didn't mind!).

  3. Hotel 41 in the heart of time square...just google the name you'll find it. The rooms are small but everything is nicely decorated.

  7. We stayed at Hotel Belleclaire on the Upper West Side and loved it. It's just a few blocks from a subway stop, Zabar's, Central Park, and the Museum of Natural History. We reserved a king room and were very comfortable. Even had a nice view of the Hudson.

I stay there for work - midtown, friendly staff, cool but not TOO cool... I love it. Walking distance to almost everything, and the Greek restaurant across the street is fantastic. No one that I have ever sent there has been disappointed!

  11. I just wrote abou the Park 79 Hotel. While in NYC make sure and check out the Isabela Toledo exhibit at the FIT museum. I just saw it last week.....it's incredible.

  12. I'd recommend either the Tribeca Grand or the SoHo Grand for beautiful and hip boutique hotels if you want to be in a non-midtown part of the city.

  13. I highly suggest 6 Columbus hotel. It's a small boutique hotel that has amazing customer service and is hip and modern. They even have Kiehl products in the bathroom! The hotel is across the street from the subway and a shopping mall/Whole Foods. The hotel also has a sushi restaurant. I could go on and on!

We have stayed three times and 6 Columbus is the only hotel that we will stay at in NYC. We book at quikbook.com which has the best rates for that hotel and many more.

  14. The ACE hotel. Hands down.

    Also, shop at Muji.

Eat at Gotham Bar and Grill for the Prix Fix lunch--reservations required.

  15. Cooper Square Hotel - it's downtown, it's hip, and has relatively reasonable prices. But, like almost all NYC hotels, small rooms.

  16. Sublet. Its the best way to go, especially if you contacts in the city who could find out if any of their friends (ward members) are going to be gone while you are there.

  17. hi there! hope you don't mind my sister forwarded me the link to your blogging on la maisonette a few weeks ago because i used to live in france and am in love with all things beautiful! i have loved reading your blog - it is a little highlight for me at certain moments in the work day when i need something diverting :)

in any case, i live in manhattan and when my parents come to visit they stay at On the Ave hotel (another person recommended it too!) - it's really great. if you're into something a bit more "hip" (ha!) - check out The Jane hotel, down in the west village, which looks just like a wes anderson movie. it's where all the cool kids are staying these days :)

in any case, i love your blog and am very jealous of your french adventures :) my boyfriend is german and our dream is to live in a historic home someday and i sent him your blog as further inspiration for us :) so thank you again!

  18. I just stayed at the Tribeca Grand hotel and was stunned at the size of the room! It was hard to leave! Great location too...but I love lower Manhattan. Muji is only a few blocks away...

  19. We stayed at The Morgans and loved it. The rooms were designed by Andree Putman, beautiful and classic modern design. The complimentary breakfast was over the top in the in house restaurant and we had excellent service. Its a four star in midtown on Madison Ave and we got a great deal by booking online. Good luck.

  21. Ohhh! I love weddings in NYC! How much fun! I would recommend the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Great location in downtown Manhattan. Close to soho and the village. The rooms were great and the hotel is very hip! Good luck!

  22. I haven't stayed there - but my friend just did and loved it. It is lower Manhattan and is new. It's the Hilton Inn Garden Suites in Tribeca. Rooms really nice, great location, and good rates...

  26. I also recommend On The Ave Hotel. I recently moved away from New York City, but while I lived there it was a hotel my work organization used for business guests. My parents also stayed there one Thanksgiving and got a fantastic rate. The least expensive rooms are small, but it's modern and clean. It's also in a great neighborhood, and two new restaurants just opened on the ground floor! Have fun - I'm jealous!

  27. I also HIGHLY recommend The Ace Hotel. Great not-so-touristy location, affordable for NYC, and hip as all get out. I just stayed there two weeks ago and it was fabulous.

  28. On the Ave. is our favorite place to stay in NYC. I've been there 3 times and will definitely go back. Check their website for a great promotion they are offering. Incredible price for a wonderful hotel in a perfect location!

  30. The Library Hotel in NYC is fabulous.
    Here's a link to their website: http://www.libraryhotel.com/

Here's a description of the rooms: Each of the Library Hotel New York City’s guest room floors are dedicated to one of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System*: Social Sciences, Literature, Languages, History, Math & Science, General Knowledge, Technology, Philosophy, The Arts and Religion. Each of the sixty exquisitely appointed rooms have been individually adorned with a collection of art and books relevant to one distinctive topic within the category of the floor it belongs to. Choose your favorite or explore the unique delights of each room, one visit at a time. New York City lodging at it’s finest!

    Good Travels,

  31. On The Ave at 76th-ish & Broadway. We've stayed there and had loads of family stay there over the years. It is mod, sleek and affordable. Sadly, it is in our very un-hip Upper West Side. Give it a chance! You might like it!

  32. Hi there,
I second the recommendations for On The Ave as it's inexpensive, family friendly--and near the park.

I have also stayed at the Ace and the only thing it had going for it was the fact that the people were nice. Other than that, the location was terrible, there was someone's sandwich in my fridge when I checked in, my toilet clogged immediately, and there was no heat in my room. When they sent the engineer up, he said their heating system wasn't working and if I wanted heat, I'd have to open the windows since it was warmer outside. (My associate was staying as well and had the same heat issue in her room.)

In the morning, they were 15 minutes late with my wake-up call--not helpful when I was in town for work--and I had only lukewarm water in my shower.

Oh, and I guess the rooms could be considered hip if you are a fan of prison chic. Way too dark and institutional, especially with kids.

It reminded me of why I left Portland for Northampton. (I own Essentials--thanks for the Raves!)
Just a bit too hip for my taste, especially if you can't get things right!

  37. The Grace-- It is super affordable, really modern and I think its technically considered a hostel but I am not quite sure why-- seemed like a hotel when I stayed there. We saw lots of Europeans families when we stayed there, and the pool is awesome.
