Whites + Woods: Gorgeous Dining Rooms

• 23 November 2010

This week I'm focusing heavily on finishing up our dining room and drawing on these gorgeous images for inspiration. Wouldn't you love to eat at either table? I keep trying to branch out with more color, but I'm starting to wonder if that's really "me". Despite efforts, I keep coming back to pretty neutrals that focus on textures and interesting furnishings for visual interest vs. straight up color.

What are your thoughts on the mismatched-chair-look? You like?

P.S. On a totally unrelated side note...does anyone happen to be heading to the Seattle area, from Utah, for Thanksgiving tomorrow? Please email if you are. Merci!

  1. White is my favorite color and my home is very neutral, I tried to branch out once and instantly regretted it. So I say, if you keep coming back to "simple" then that's the way to go! Both of these rooms are gorgeous! (although not sure I love having ALL mis-matched chairs, but maybe 2different ones at the head of the table would be okay.

  2. Ah...I LOVE those warm whites! I'm trying to find the perfect warm white for our loft, but can't quite pinpoint one. One that isn't Farrow and Ball pricey!!

    So pretty.

  3. I struggle with the same love of neutrals (in decor and fashion)! I love seeing colourful rooms in magazines and other homes, but it's just not me! Go with what you love and you can always add fresh flowers or art for touches of colour when you're in the mood. I'm with Molly on the chairs as well. Good luck finishing it up this week!

  4. Wow! This is what my room looks like right now! I built a table because I couldn't find the size I needed in my budget. I acquired some white leather and chrome dining chairs a month ago.

I haven't had the time to stain and finish the table, so it's been its natural color. I'd planned on staining and lacquering it black, but these pictures are swaying my mind...

  5. I love both rooms, even the mismatched chairs although I think I would limit it to chairs with legs. I love the neutrals yet find that I have a lot of color acquired on my travels. Finding a balance is challenging. The one on the left is my fav!

  6. All great thoughts...love your ideas on accenting too. A great excuse to have fresh flowers hanging about :)

Rebekka, we used a warm white on the main floor of La Maisonnette that we love. In fact we are considering it for our current space too. It's Mediterranean White by Restoration Hardware. We had a local French co there mix it up and were very pleased.

  9. Maybe because we had mismatching chairs for so long, I have become definitely more of a matching chair type of girl these days. Pretty photos, can't wait to see your new table :)

  10. I'm not a big mismatch chair fan - unless its the two "head"chairs, but I do love the white and the wood.

We'll be headed to Bellevue for t-day.

  11. so glad to hear this. i have been feeling that i am out of touch and style because i am not on the color movement. so i tried to branch out and incorporate color and regretted it. stick with what you love
neutrals, particularly brown and white are my favorite. peaceful, classic and timeless. also i have never understood the mismatched chair thing either. i am just boring i guess.

  12. I agree with these other ladies. The neutral is so nice and you need to do what you love. We just moved and I'm re-upholstering my dining chairs. They are white (terrrible with kiddos) and I'm tempted to bring in some color...these images are so soothing. I often like mismatched chairs but in the case there isn't enough pulling them together...not liking the big bulky with the others. jennifer

  13. those are both beautiful kitchens. i want to like the mismatched chair thing but personally it would leave me feeling unsettled if i had to look at them everyday in my own house. but, hey, if you go that route, i'm sure it will look great.

  15. I think the mismatched chair thing works well for some but for me, I like continuity and simplicity. As for color, I realize more and more that I like a simple palette that doesn't scream at me.

When I'm in my home, I want it to be a refuge. I want people to feel peace. Our lives are so busy (I have 5 little kids) so people and the energy they bring can liven things. With a peaceful background, nothing in the decor is demanding my attention when I walk in the door. Just my thoughts.

I always love what you do. I'm sure it will be fabulous. I can't wait to see it!
