stephmodo: Easy {Homemade} Crumb Cake + an Edible Valentine

Easy {Homemade} Crumb Cake + an Edible Valentine

• 08 February 2011

Last Friday I was feeling a bit glum; so, I decided to do something to shake myself out of my crummy mood. I decided that making a simple, delicious cake was the first step :)...and then giving most of it away was the second. Based on experience, the best way to chase away a foul mood is by doing something nice for someone else.

So, I whipped out some pie boxes, parchment and twine and placed a wedge of crumb cake in each box. After I assembled them all, I realized how cute they would be for Valentine's Day next week...so I added a few more to the shop. How fun to present a few friends with a little package for the holiday (because Valentine's Day isn't just for your lovah)!

In the meantime, you can find my easy crumb cake recipe here. I think you'll agree that it's a keeper!

  4. Would you mind sharing your source for that baker's twine? I can't seem to find that nice kind anywhere, just the kind that's thinner. I would really appreciate it-and super cute idea, by the way!

  6. Hi Mary, I actually picked up that twine in Europe...it is lovely isn't it? I will try and see about getting some in the shop this year. It would be a fun thing to share with you!

  11. I could not get the crumb mixture to crumb come hell or high water. It actually ended up being kind of weird and crunchy. What kind of sugar or butter did you use? :(

  12. Natalie, I'm sorry to hear that! Did your results look like mine (see image)? I just used light brown sugar and regular butter. Probably the store-brand of both so nothing special. Was the cake over-baked? sometimes different ovens and different altitudes affect that sort of thing. Hmmm...'tis a mystery!

Let me know if you have more questions!

  13. Thanks Stephanie! I think I might have gone wrong by using low fat butter spread...Ooops! The cake was still yummy though! I made it for Valentine's Day for my colleagues, and cut it into a heart shape. Thanks for sharing your recipe, I'll use full fat butter next time! :)

  14. Stephanie, I'm always impressed by your clever packaging and serving ideas but what inspires me is your generosity towards friends and neighbors. Following your lead I shared the bounty of my kitchen with neighbors this week. What do you think? http://thewellwornapron.blogspot.com/2011/02/meyer-lemon-pudding-to-go.html

  15. Mary & Stephanie: I found some bakers twine at Paper Source in Palo Alto, California and they have an on-line store. http://search.paper-source.com/index/_/N-/Ntt-bakers%20twine A ½ pound ball is $7.95 (the one at the store was marked as 15 yards, not by weight)

If you want a lifetime supply of baker’s twine try Bell’occhio, a tiny fun shop in San Francisco. To buy on-line - $35.00 http://www.bellocchio.com/catalogue/papeterie/stripedstring/
