Strawberries with Crème Fraîche and Brown Sugar

• 29 March 2012

Now this is my kind of "before and after"!  I'm getting pretty excited about all the strawberries popping up at the grocery store this week...can it be?  Is sunshine and warmth in my neck of the woods really around the corner?  Apparently in strawberry-growing-country it's already there and for that I am grateful; I need a taste of summer just a teensy bit early. I'm already dreaming of the rich, luscious Shuksan strawberries that will dot the Washington countryside come July.  They make the most amazing freezer jam

But until then, what better way to enjoy strawberries than with homemade crème fraîche and brown sugar? For me, the enjoyment not only lies in the way the flavors and textures meld so perfectly together, but in the memories the dessert conjures up.  When I was little, our family dipped strawberries in sour cream and then a bowl of brown sugar; I'll never forget how good that first bite tasted.  I have to say though, that upgrading to creme fraiche is a good move here.  It's one of the easiest, most delicious treats you'll ever make.  Promise.

  4. I could not agree more! I have a serious weakness for creme fraiche, I have to limit how often I allow my self to buy it. Enjoyed with strawberries & brown sugar is my favorite (good thing Strawberries are one of the best foods for you!). It's pretty great on breakfast burritos, too! I feel lucky to have be able to buy some really great stuff made locally! YUMMMM!

  5. I tried your creme fraiche recipe and it was delicious! I used it to make a pasta alla vodka sauce and it was also amazing on top of ataulfo mangos with a little sprinkle of chili powder. Yum!

  6. One of our families favorites! Some people don't get it, but then they try it, and like that- they're hooked! Have you ever tried this combo on German Oven Pancakes? In case you haven't and want your kids to loooooooove you even more:) I'll email you the recipe. It's the meal I'll request as my last before I die. No kidding.

    Beautiful picture too!

  10. My mother called this "Strawberries Romanoff" and we served it at my brother's wedding reception in the early 80's. Our guests couldn't get enough of it!
