Guacamole

• 15 May 2012

Several years ago I picked up a cookbook at my mother's home about authentic Mexican cooking and started perusing its pages. While I cannot remember the name of the book, I do remember the impression I had--what I thought was traditional Mexican cuisine was actually watered-down Mexican cuisine!  It was eye-opening to become more familiar with unique ingredients (hello Jicama!), frequently-used produce (limes, limes and more limes) and interesting recipes associated with various regions.

Today over at Cafe Zupas I am sharing my recipe for guacamole, inspired by this experience and my love for Mexican food.  In fact, whenever I'm traveling abroad, the first thing I crave upon returning is good, fresh, Mexican food.  So grab a bag of good tortilla chips, a lawn chair and a cool drink and enjoy some great guacamole!

  1. I feel the same way....we recently returned from an extra long trip in Switzerland and not only did I have a friend of mine make me some of her authentic tamales and picked them up only hours of being home, but also ate cafe rio twice the weekend we returned. Mexican food is the best

  2. Yep! When I lived in the South of France, where food is incroyable, I still missed Mexican food! Thanks for this recipe; I'll be trying it with the best grocery store tortilla chips I've found in Seattle - Cabo Loco - locally made and you can find them at QFC.

  3. Avocados must be in season right now, they were 6 for a dollar at my local Mexican produce store! You better believe I'll be making some guacamole!

  4. Amy, that is one nice friend of yours...don't lose her!

Alison B, thank you so much for the chip rec. I'll check out QFC for sure. They are so random, that store. Some things there are SO great but then they lack other things. Do you feel the same?

Amber, 6 for a dollar? Are you kidding me? I thought 6 for $6 at Costco was a good price but your Mexican market takes the cake. Lucky you!

  5. Oh, thank you. I am ever on a quest to find the best guacamole and while I've come close, I don't think I've found it yet. I am going to try your recipe!

  6. Steph, we were in Las Vegas this weekend and had the best guacamole at ChinaPoblano restaurant in the Cosmopolitan. And I honestly think this may be the recipe! We discussed during the entire meal, what ingredients are in this guac? So we asked our server...he named the things you have listed, as well as a tomatillo! I am totally trying this....if you are ever in Vegas, you must eat at ChinaPoblano.

  7. PS...they also topped it with cotija cheese for a little zest...

  8. Adrienne, love the idea of adding a tomatillo next time. Maybe instead of the serrano? Thanks for the heads up on that restaurant. If I'm ever in Vegas again...:)

  9. To answer, Yep. I tend to frequent about 5 markets to get what I want for food these days. Nothing seems to be the one stop shop for me.

  10. Alison B, I feel the same way. It's frustrating but I keep doing it to get the best bang for my buck. C'est la vie.
