Big Apple Pizzeria

• 05 August 2008

When I was a child we lived in small-ish town in Connecticut called Bloomfield...home to a family-owned pizzeria with a name I've long since forgotten. Every two weeks, when my father received his paycheck, we ate at this local joint as a family. We called it "Payday Pizza" rightly so. I can still remember the red crackled plastic glasses, the excitement of going out together as a family, and the time my Dad dumped salt all over his meal, thinking it was parmesan cheese. As kids we thought that was the most hilarious thing ever--seeing an adult do something that we were likely to do ourselves. Great memories.

In Salt Lake there is a pizzeria, called Big Apple, that reminds me a little of the place my family frequented in Connecticut. They also make New York style pizza and the atmosphere is similar in many ways too. We love to eat there occasionally as a family and enjoy a casual eating experience together. My absolute favorite are the Garlic Knots with Tomato sauce. I could subsist on these alone, they are sooooo tasty. We try to order a plate of garlic knots as soon as we sit down (they are made to order) to tide everyone over until the yummy pizza arrives. It does the trick :)

  1. It was called "Park Avenue Pizza", and I think it was sugar he dumped all over his pizza because the containers were similar, not salt (not that it matters ;-) That was a good tradition!

  3. Pay Day Pizza. We started that tradition too when our kids were little. Your dad told us about it and we followed suit for years after that!

  4. My husband grew up in Bloomfield CT! At least for a few years between his dad's naval stations... They frequented Gus's Pizza though.

  5. We must be neighbors because you highlight so many places and things in my neck of the woods! We (myself, my husband and four little kids) call Big Apple "our" pizza place because it's our go-to for pizza when we go out. Those garlic knots? Heaven in garlic salt. Enjoy your pastries in Paris - heaven in Heaven!

  6. We lived in Bloomfield for a year after college and I remember Park Avenue Pizza too. It was within walking distance of where we lived. There were a few good pizza places there.

  7. I was going to suggest Park Avenue Pizza...I know we always ordered Max's pizza, but I don't remember if they had a restaurant. I don't think my parents wanted to haul us all off to a pizza place anyway. :) haha

  8. I'm so glad you did a post about this! Everytime I go to Cafe Rio, I think "I wonder if that pizza place is good." Now I know it is and I will definitely be trying it!
