One of the best parts of driving around the country {seeking out furnishings and such} is stumbling upon the unexpected. This little church in the middle of nowhere immediately struck me...I'm dying to know the story behind it and the initials on the beautiful doors.
Beautiful. There are many tiny places for prayer like that along the coutryside of Austria where I live, most of them are for travelers as an oportunity for them to stop and pray.
ReplyDeleteYeah, Mexico has them too (have been; don't live there). They're little chapels, so to speak, and they're usually dedicated to a saint. Were there candles inside? I'm not Catholic, and I'm pretty sure they are, so I could very likely be wrong... but that's what I get of them. That little chapel/church is definitely beautiful. I love all of the pictures you share. Thanks again!

ReplyDeleteInteresting that little places to stop and pray are common in some places. It made me think of a mausoleum at first.

ReplyDeleteYou're right...a mausoleum probably makes more sense and would explain the initials on the doors.
ReplyDeleteIn France and throughout Europe these little churches are actually a burial site for the Lords or Ladys of the Land in that region. They are truly beautiful and the initials are the name of that person. I would ask the nearest village or township about the story.

ReplyDeleteThey are in Belgium, too, for when the big church was too far away from where people were living to make it easy to go on a daily or frequent basis. I think the initials usually are of the family who built it.
