Bruges

• 06 November 2009

Everyone who visits Belgium says how much they enjoy Bruges...it seems to be the unanimous favorite. I'd visited Belgium before, but ironically, not Bruges. So having the opportunity to walk along the streets of this beautiful little city was simply wonderful for me. Although the weather was gray, there were many things around town to brighten one's spirits...like these orange pincushion plants, fantastic architecture, Dille & Kamille, lots of chocolate, and one fun little boat ride through the canals. My kids absolutely adored the latter and was undoubtedly the highlight of the day.

What are your favorite stops in Bruges? I'd love to go back sometime and really get to know it better.

  3. I don't know if I had one favorite place in Bruges, but definitely my favorite memory was seeing, throughout the town, ladies sitting in their doorways making lace. So sweet!

  4. love bruges! we always keep going back each time we visit europe...it is so quaint, romantic, and intoxicating.

my husband and i often look at each other during dinner, over the heads of the babies, and reminisce of the wonderful meals we have shared there, holding hands, walking and window shopping along the cobblestone streets, and sleeping in under our fluffy duvet. so wonderful!

  6. Has it really been almost 20 years since my visit? Sadly, yes. I don't remember specifics but I loved it as well. I still remember the canals and the lovely two days spent roaming around. So charming and so fun.

  7. Coming out of lurkdom on this one ... Bruges is one of my absolute favorite cities on Planet Earth. And by far, my favorite thing to do was watch the lace makers. It is such a beautiful city no matter if the weather is gray or not!
I spent most of my childhood in France (and most college holidays) and have immensely enjoyed reading your adventures.

  12. Like everyone else seems to be saying, the canals and the lace-makers are my favorite. And going into every chocolate shop I see. But I think my favorite is a visit to the Madonna of Bruges (some fun similarities to the Pieta).

  15. Kirk and I rented bikes and spent the day riding along the canals and windmills along the town perimeter. Loved it. Also - I'm a sucker for the Flemish Masters, and there was a really great museum (the Groeninge) in Brugges with paintings by Bruegel, Van Eyck and more...

  16. LOVE the picture you sent of us eating belgium waffles ten years ago in Antwerp:)

I have so many great memories from Bruges.

My kids loved playing on that little bridge between the park of Gruuthuse and the church of our lady and the canal is beautiful at the Vineyard Square/Minnewater Park outside the Béguinage.
I don't know if you made it to either of those places. I felt like we were in a story book.

  17. I love Bruges. My favorite memory is when I literally stumbled across a Dali exhibit. It was wonderful and I still have the poster from the exhibit.

  18. I found your blog tonight from Design Mom and I've been browsing your posts on Europe. I am so happy to find this post. My dad fell in love with Bruges while he was there and my parents named me after the town. They Americanized the spelling of the Flemish pronunciation, but I have always dreamed of going there and it is so fun to hear such high praise of this town. Someday I will make it there.
    I am loving your blog.
