stephmodo: Favorite Movies to Watch During the Holidays

Favorite Movies to Watch During the Holidays

• 06 December 2010

Since our Christmas will be very simple this year (the best kind in my book), I am hoping for more time to bake, celebrate and gift and watch holiday movies! Less time shopping = more time to relish in the holiday spirit. We recently watched "Dan in Real Life" and I was again reminded how much I love that movie, especially during the holidays for some reason. Now, this isn't a "holiday" movie per se, rather, it feels appropriate for this time of year as there is a heavy emphasis on family relationships and supporting one another. It's also humorous, and there's no doubt we could all use a little comedic relief in between all the holiday hoopla. Plus, what's not love about Juliette Binoche and Steve Carell?

I've created a tidy list of movies that I love watching during the holidays. Feel free to add your own picks in the comments. I would love to hear what your favorites are as well!

1. Charlie Brown Christmas - remember watching this when you were little? Well, it's still cute. We bring it out each year (I even store it with the Christmas decorations).

2. It's a Wonderful Life - a good reminder to be good, loyal + generous in all aspects of life.

3. Miracle on 34th Street - the sweetest Santa Clause ever. He will always be real in our home.

4. White Christmas - my sisters and I love watching this together (we loved singing the "Sisters, Sisters" song as kids). It makes me want to hole up in a country inn somewhere in New England for Christmas. Someday perhaps.

After the Kids are in Bed:

5. Dan in Real Life - in addition to all the good things I mentioned earlier in this post, it's also one of my all-time favorite movies. I hope Ben and I are the kind of parents depicted in this film. And I also hope that someday when my children are adults, that they enjoy visiting us too. Love the family talent show gig.

6. The Family Man - puts life in perspective and what it's all about. It's certainly not money or material possessions.

7. Edward Scissorhands - all that silently falling snow seems so perfect for Christmas, and winter in general. It's been awhile since I watched this, but it's on my list this year. Time to update the Netflix queue!

  3. Hmmm...definitely It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street. I also love the Alistair Sim or George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol. Those three are stored along with our Christmas decorations. We always watch Charlie Brown while we decorate our tree. I like A Family Man too. Little Women is a good one. Ooooh Love Actually! A great one for the holiday season. The part where the little kids make Hugh Grant's character sing carols cracks me up every time! Wow - sorry for the long comment. perhaps I should create my own post on this! :-)

  9. And Holiday Inn, sister, White Christmas' prequel where the song White Christmas originated! Only downside is the black-face routine; relics of our countries past...sigh.

  10. Thank you for reminding me about Dan in Real Life. I always meant to see that and didn't. In our family we are huge fans of Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (not technically a movie, but we watch it on DVD), Little Women (all girl family - how could we not love it), You've Got Mail and ELF.

  13. For me, I LOVE the movie The Holiday. For the kids, they really enjoy the new Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey, and the old claymation type animated classic Santa Claus is Coming to Town.

  14. Dan in Real Life is one of my favorite movies, too. It's so sincere.

Our favorite Christmas movie is Elf! The scene where Will Farrell accuses the fake department store Santa of sitting on a throne of lies makes me laugh every time.

  15. We always watch Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer... next year, perhaps we can afford to buy it, since it's getting hard to find & they don't play it on TV much.

  16. It's a Wonderful Life, White Christmas, and SCROOGE with Albert Finney...I also like The Preacher's Wife with Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston....great soundtrack!

  17. A Christmas Carol, White Christmas (adored since childhood!), Miracle on 34th (the precious original), Little Women, Love Actually. And for the little guys: the Polar Express and Muppets Christmas Carol are beloved. I know, I know, it's the muppets, but it's a non-scary exposure to the classic story which my 4 year old now loves.

  18. thank you! i was just thinking about edward scissorhands the other day, and how firmly i believe it is a christmas movie, even though it can be construed as a halloween movie... conversely-wise, the nightmare before christmas, while deceptively about christmas, is TOTALLY a halloween movie. that is all.

  19. I have a horrible, horrible thing to admit: I don't like It's a Wonderful Life. I find it depressing. But, I absolutely LOVE White Christmas! It is my favorite Christmas movie of all time! And a close second might be Home Alone.
