Pencil This In #2

• 30 November 2007

Art Market at Sugarhouse Park starts Thursday, December 6, and runs through Saturday, December 8. I've been wanting to check it out for the past few years but always seem to miss it by a day. Not this year...I'm determined to not miss it yet again. I've heard wonderful things about the homemade goodness available there so pencil this is...in fact, "pen" it in.

Click here to head to their official site for hours.

Just in Time for Christmas

The possibilities are endless with this lace tape...I'm leaning towards white lace tape over deep red wrapping paper.

Priced very reasonably as well.

Found on Oboiler via print & pattern.

Everyday Domino

My sister Cher is inspiring in many ways...she is super organized (she puts me to shame!), responsible, fun and motivated. When it comes to DIY'ers, she is the wo-man. She must be one of the few women I know that can install a disposal, hang a chandelier, paint without tape, and transform furniture. Her secret? lots of energy, a hard-working attitude and an early bedtime.

These pictures prove that anyone with a sense of style can design a Domino-worthy space...no professional training needed. Cher started clipping pages out of magazines that she liked and compiled them in a binder so when it came to renovation time, she had a wealth of information at her fingertips. She deliberately chose bright colors to offset the gray days of Seattle. Incredible foresight on her part I think.

P.S. A little plug for Craigslist....she found some amazing pieces of mid-century furniture on her local Craigslist for super low prices. It reaffirmed my love for Craigslist and the fantastic deals you can find there. Give it a try if you haven't already!

I think her B-more friends will be very surprised at this new look!

My Kind of Lunch Box

If I packed a lunch before heading to my job (versus eating lunch with my jobs), I would take this...it is cute, different, functional, pretty and appears to be easy to clean.

Click here to view more details and additional colors. I think the bright fuchsia/orange combo would be great for a tween or teen.

Slow Cooker Meal: Fajitas

Last year I spent an entire evening at the public library pouring through slow cooker recipe books in an attempt to find recipes that didn't include cream of anything soup or a dried onion soup mix. I found a handful of good recipes that I'll be featuring over these next few chilly months! It is always nice to have a standby slow cooker recipe on hand during the colder months.

Slow-Cooker Fajitas, serves 8-10 people

1 1/2 - 2 lbs. flank or skirt steak, or boneless chicken
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 red or green pepper, sliced
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 jalopeno chile, seeded and finely chopped
2 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tB. fresh lemon juice

warm tortillas (I love Tortillaland in the refrigerated section)
sour cream
avocado

Cut meat across the grain into 1/2 inch diagonal strips. Place in a slow cook cooker. Top with onion and bell pepper. In a small bowl, combine garlic, chile, chili powder, cumin, salt, oil and lemon juice. Pour mixture over meat. Cover and cook on LOW for 6 to 6 1/2 hours. Spoon several slices of meat with sauce into center of each warm tortilla. Fold over. Top with sour cream and avocado.

Bon appetit!

Drooling

I find that women are usually skirt and top people or dress people. While I own a couple of skirts, I tend to be drawn to dresses most of the time. I've discussed this "tendency" with one of my sisters and came to a few conclusions as to why women tend to be one or another and why I'm the latter...a dress kind of girl:

1. dresses strike me as quite feminine and after all, a girl has got to keep up her 13-year-old high school reputation as Most Feminine in her class! lol Clearly those voters didn't know me at all :)

2. it's an easy outfit--no coordination between pieces necessary--and I don't have time to think that much about my wardrobe

These things being said, I am currently drooling over this dress at Anthro. It's beautiful, modest, unique, but unfortunately expensive. I'll hold out for a possible sale!

Classic Pumpkin Pie

This past Thanksgiving holiday marked a first for me--a homemade pie. I'm big into doing most things from scratch but when it came to pumpkin pie, I confess...I used canned puree like most of us as well as a frozen pie crust. I've turned a new leaf however, and it wasn't difficult. If you have a food processor it's a cinch. Seriously.

Buy a 4 lb sugar pumpkin. Cut in half and scoop out seeds, strings, etc. Place down on rimmed cookie sheet. Pour a cup of water onto the sheet. Roast on 350 for 90 minutes. Scoop out baked pumpkin and puree in a processor. Hands on time was about 5 minutes total. You have yourself the homemade equivalent of a can of Libbys.

Click here for the full Classic Pumpkin Pie recipe.

Thanks to the inspiration of my friend Tamara, I made a homemade pie crust too. Again, something I was always intimidated by before I realized how easy it was to make. It's a good lesson for me to learn.

Click here for the pie crust/ pate brisee recipe.

Next time I will not serve my pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. Instead, I will chill it in the fridge and serve it for breakfast the next morning since that is the way I like to eat it anyway and I know I'm not the only one! Let's be honest with ourselves, it's so much better this way :)

Journal a la Nantaka Joy

• 19 November 2007

This journal is so delicate and beautiful, it almost motivates me to actually write on its pretty little scalloped pages (I'm starting to notice this affinity towards anything scalloped...). I know someone in particular who would love this journal...and she would actually use it too. I need to be more like that.

How brilliant is this?  This is the kind of "recycling" we need to do in the US. Amber, thank you for passing this along. Tres cool.

Etsy Finds: Christmas Tags

This year, I'd like to wrap my Christmas gifts in kraft brown paper with red and white twine before adding one of these Christmas tags to dress it up. Simple, pretty and old-fashioned.

There is much to choose from on Etsy, but I narrowed down to these four. Please note these may sell out by the time you view this post. However, don't fret because most often the Etsy sellers automatically relist after each purchase. Simply click on "__ items for sale" and you will be led to the homepage where you can view everything available.

Onto the fun stuff!

Pretty little "thangs"...all scalloped and all! Definitely girly. Click here to view.

This is more of a unisex Christmas tag...I love the substantial grosgrain ribbon
strung through the tag. Click here to see more of her goodies.

These are pretty too...love the red cardinal. I miss seeing those around.

Last, these are perfect for a little gal. Click here to view.

Holiday Gift Show

My goal is to conclude the bulk of my Christmas shopping by December 1. If that's truly going to happen, I'll have to head here. It's been great every year I've attended and I'm always amazed at the incredible talent so many women here possess. See you there!

From the Archives Part I

I am heading out to Seattle tomorrow for a family vacation--in fact it is our first family vacation involving air travel. Ooohhh, I can hardly wait to travel with three small children! :)

I'll be posting links to archived posts that I love and find pertinent to this holiday gift-giving season. If it's old news for you...sorry...I guess these posts will be geared towards new readers mostly. After a few days of archived posts, we'll go back to brand new posts.

I am sure Seattle will inspire so sit tight. It will be fun to explore a new city--one of my favorite things to do!

Right now I'm mostly excited about:

1. seeing my sister and family
2. visiting Paper Source and choosing supplies for handmade Christmas cards (I know, I'm crazy)
3. eating yummy seafood
4. the fact that precipitation is scheduled to be light to none. Yessssssss!

Onto archived posts:

Affordable Letterpress: Undoubtedly, letterpress is the most beautiful stationery to give and these Etsy shops make it affordable to do.

Scalloped Cupcake Cups: Perfect neighbor gift for the holidays.

Punked Out: So not me, but so very hilarious.

Navarro Vineyards Grape Juice
: The perfect hostess gift for the non-drinker (it is delicious!)

30% off Koo de Ker

• 17 November 2007

While picking up a lovely gift box of chocolates at Xocolat this past week, I noticed a coupon on the counter for 30% off one item at Koo de Ker. I snatched one up and hit the sale rack within minutes and found a pair of denim city shorts marked down from $60 to $15. Cha-ching.

So head to Xocolat (two doors down from Trio near 9th & 9th) and treat yourself to a decadent cup of cocoa or a few gourmet chocolates (my faves include mole and pina) and pick up a coupon. Koo de Ker is in the neighborhood so it makes for a fun little outing.

The offer is good through Tuesday, November 20th.

Note: Between Xocolat & Trio is Nailed--the best place in town to take your 10-year-old daughter for a child mani/pedi. Nailed offers a full service style menu for kids and adults alike.

Monogrammed Notes

• 14 November 2007

Being a huge fan of anything monogrammed, especially stationery, I was thoroughly delighted at finding these next to the cash register at my local Old Navy...surprise surprise.

Confession: I've been back 3 times to purchase more. It's the perfect little giftie. Shockingly the paper is of a fairly heavy weight...envelopes too. You'll be amazed at the quality given the $5 price point. These remind me of something from Spitfire Girl.

Note: To my knowledge, they are not available online, only in stores. Bummer.

My Favorite Household Tool

This muscle man comes in handy time after time. Who would've guessed we could use it pretty much everywhere...including outside!

What is your favorite household tool? I'd love know...

1

White Books

I see stacks of white books in virtually every professionally styled catalog and design magazine. I found myself drawn to this ultra clean look but didn't want to spend much money on creating it in my own home. I found myself cruising the aisles of Bukoos as well as the bargain book sections of B&N & Borders. For about $25 I found some beautiful white books, on interesting subjects, with pretty pages to boot.

It's easy to create this look on a budget because most retailers considerably mark down books with damaged jackets. Since I didn't need the jackets for this project I scored book after book for under $10 for a hardback! My stack isn't as tall as I'd like but I'm still looking!

On Throwing Dinner Parties

I often hear people discuss their apprehension regarding hosting dinner parties. To those of you in this boat, read on...

Some key points regarding entertaining:

1. People don't care about the food (they just care about being invited!)

Once I threw a dinner party and really loused up a Barefoot Contessa Rosemary Bean soup. It was inedible. What did we do to appease our 14 guests? B. ordered takeout from our favorite Thai restaurant down the street. Obviously the food wasn't extremely memorable but the laughter, the conversation, the decorations, and the party favors on the way out the door made up for it all. People still had a great time...I think...food aside. No one expects Martha Stewart when they open the door; again, your guests will just be thrilled you thought of them enough to invite them over, even if it is for takeout.

2. Relax and have fun at your own party.

The Barefood Contessa offers many a scrumptious recipe all in the name of "make-ahead" because she emphasizes in each of her cookbooks the importance of being relaxed. If you're running around unhappy, stressed out, and all-around grumpy, guests will feel uncomfortable. To combat any of these feelings do as much as you can ahead of time. If you choose a baked item (roasted chicken, baked ziti, chicken with morels, etc.) this will ease up some time before guests arrive to attend to last-minute details. You can buy & cut up baguettes ahead; make homemade salad dressings ahead; crisp lettuce and chop up salad ingredients ahead; opt for desserts like chocolate pots-de-cremes, which can be made ahead. You get the idea.

Hosting a dinner party for say 8 people is the perfect place to start. Buy a few inexpensive but stylish invitations here, consult the Barefoot Contessa Parties cookbook for menu ideas here, and choose some unique Christmas music here. Voila, you have yourself an easy-to-put-together and very memorable dinner party. Now start making that guest list!

Who doesn't love a party?

Without Further Adue...the Little Elephant

One of my favorite Halloween costumes ever...

A Little Birdie "Showed" Me

I'm featuring this not because I necessarily love the bird jewelry holder, but rather because on it hangs my all-time favorite earrings from my all-time favorite chic box retailer. After being involved in Williams Sonoma Home/Chambers photo shoots (sister company to PB), I know some PB stylist saw these during her yearly suburban trek to Target (a good 30 minutes from the city with no traffic), fell in love with them like I did, and then threw them in with all the other random props collected over the years.

It's funny to see them on the pages of the catalog...not where I expected to see them next. People phoned the call center, and sometimes even the corporate office at times, quite frequently hoping to find out where certain props were purchased. These were tough questions because most times, no one remembered. I hope this time they made note.

You can't find these online but you'll find them in the jewelry section at Target for a mere $6. They come in brushed gold and silver.

5

Coconut Macaroons

My favorite bakery/patisserie in Salt Lake is Les Madeleines--this is no secret. Romina makes a wonderful coconut macaroon there I absolutely love. Since her hours changed (closed now at 3 instead of 6) I find it difficult to get there for a post-afternoon snack as my kids usually nap until 3:30. So, I decided to try my hand at recreating this little treat I enjoy so very much.

These are the perfect holiday goody for friends and neighbors. I placed several in a white chinese take out box and then tied it with a multi-colored grosgrain ribbon and a tag from Every Jot & Tittle. Cute packaging is always a nice touch.

Click here for the recipe. But before viewing, here are a few modifications to be considered:

1. Add the zest of 1/2 to 1 orange per recipe (this recipe can be easily doubled, tripled, etc.)

2. Melt good quality (I used 65% Ghirardelli) semi-sweet chocolate and dip the bottoms of the macaroons into the chocolate. Place on parchment covered cookie sheet and place in the refrigerator until set.

• 06 November 2007

Fall Trends

Since my career doesn't take me to Fashion Week, I always like to consult my fashionista friend Alison on trends and whatnot. She is a dear friend from high school, living in Manhattan and working in the fashion industry. I asked her what the top 5 trends for this Fall/Winter season. If you're interested, or at least curious, read on!

1. the sweater dress
2. ankle boots / booties
3. sequins
4. patent leather (anything)
5. cobalt blue clothing

I just purchased my first cobalt blue clothing items last night...can't wait to wear it. It's fun to have a different color in my closet...change is definitely good for a person!

Parmesan Risotto

• 04 November 2007

Last Sunday I felt like Old Mother Hubbard with empty cupboards...or fridge rather...when trying to figure out what in the world I was going to make for dinner with the few ingredients on hand. Luckily I found this tasty recipe per Martha Stewart. It's a keeper because almost all the ingredients called for are ingredients on the pantry shelf or that last forever in the fridge.

Both my husband and my kids enjoyed it...especially with copious amounts of Parmigiano Reggiano on top. Traditionally, risotto is served as an accompaniment to a meat dish but we find it hearty enough to serve alone. However, if you do want to serve it with a meat dish for a more traditional Italian meal, try this one. This girl has it down pat.

Click here for the full recipe.

P.S. Contrary to popular belief, risotto is super easy to make. Do not be intimidated in the slightest.

P.P.S. Costco carries Parmigiano Reggiano at a killer price...$10/lb. Don't buy it elsewhere...you'll pay double.

P.P.P.S. Wow, this is getting ridiculous. Should've just put this all in the post. Anyway, just as a little tip, you can purchase non-alcoholic wine or de-alcoholized wine at Granatos and at nice grocery stores. Check out the "Fre" or "Ariel" brands. They last longer than regular wine in the fridge. I hear these non-alcoholic wines are less sweet (and more salty) than regular wine so to curb that I sometimes add a dash of sugar and ease up on the salt as well.

Organizing Tip #4

I so need to do this...and that my friends is why this is Organizing Tip #4.

Clean Out Your Car

Take out all garbage...vacuum...wipe off the dust...windex the windows if necessary.

If you really want to do a thorough job, click here for the how-to.

Recap:
#1 Make your bed each day
#2 Clean out closet (take out everything not worn in one year)
#3 Clear off kitchen countertops (only keep items on countertops used twice weekly)

3

Fabric Swatch Wall Project

Absolute brilliance I tell you...absolute brilliance. Once again Purl inspires me to learn to sew...maybe someday. Anyway, this is a delightful way to add color (and use up those fabric swatches lying around) to an otherwise dull wall.

I love this project for three reasons:

1. it's allows for extensive creativity in choosing fabrics
2. it's inexpensive
3. it's easy

Click here for the tutorial and full photograph of the swatch wall.

2

Serious Eye Candy

If you're like me, you are just a little curious about the transformations that take place at Anthropologie stores seasonally. The details are numerous and the creativity is out of this world. I always wonder, "who does this for a living?", and "do they know how lucky they are?". I'm sure they do.

An interesting tidbit of information...did you know this is the average Anthropologie customer? 30 to 45 years old, college or post-graduate education, married with kids or in a committed relationship, professional or ex-professional, annual household income of $150,000 to $200,000.

Here is an insider's view into the transformation of a Whole Foods store to an Anthropologie boutique. It's pretty fascinating. It sounds like the visual team has enormous creative license, which I find very cool.

See more flickr photos here.

And a delightful article in the SF Chronicle about why we, as women, love anthropologie...like we had to have it explained to us or something.

Oh and if you haven't had enough, read a little ditty about the lucky Found Objects Buyer for Anthropologie who travels multiple continents as a full-time job.

1

Introducing the Marcella

Comfortable and cute. What better combo? I am very, very, very tempted.

You can find them on Piperlime in limited sizes (but in fabulous packaging!) or here at Zappos for 2 bucks cheaper and in three additional colors. I've heard the customer service at Zappos is top notch, which makes buying online less scary.

6

The Great Big Glorious Book for Girls

If you love the Dangerous Book for Boys, here is the female counterpart. It's only available in the UK currently but there is no doubt in my mind it will hit the US by storm in the not-so-distant future.

Many critics are touting it as gender-stereotypical and a mockery of feminism; so far I'm not buying it. As a parent I've noticed that despite raising my kids the same, my little guy is more inclined to play with things like trains, while my little gal is naturally interested in more creative pursuits. They are who they are. I realize that now. Not to say they can't color or play with trucks together, because my kids do and I think it's great; it's just that they gravitate towards different things on their own. Enough said, I feel a controversial comment section coming on!

From what I read this book is perfect for the 7-12 age group especially. Keep your eyes peeled! I can't wait!

Cool cover, no?

Addendum (a day later): I went to Costco today and saw the Daring Book for Girls...a slightly different version of the above-mentioned book with things like "Building a Campfire" instead of "Learning to Sew". Both seem great to me and both would make great gifts.

GOOG 411

• 03 November 2007

I've been using this free service for months and am loving it. If you have a cell phone, do not pay ridiculous fees for phone number lookups any longer. Just dial 1-800-GOOG-411 and find a listing for free...yup...free!

My favorite thing about the service (besides the fact it costs nothing) is the different voice I hear each time I call. It's like every employee at Google recorded themselves saying "GOOG 411" so each time you call, you hear a different rendition. Some are silly, some are yelling, some are professional, but all different.

What will Google think of next?

Mount Auburn Cemetary...in Autumn

Some of you may find this strange, but you Boston residents will likely agree, that Mount Auburn Cemetary is a beautiful place to visit. In the Fall I love the vibrant colors and crunchy leaves tumbling across the many footpaths dotting the hillsides; in Spring I enjoy the lily-of-the-valley popping up by the turtle pond; and in Summer I enjoy climbing to the top of the little tower for the amazing view. Who knew a cemetary could be so lovely and so appropriate of a place to visit?

My sister, who lives in Boston, sent me a beautiful letterpressed card for my birthday along with this polaroid of Mount Auburn Cemetary, which she knows is one of my favorite places in the Boston area. It is a daily reminder of our beautiful life in Boston not too long ago.

Click here to find directions to the cemetary. The official site is seductive, in a natural kind of way :)

Method to the Madness

After trusty friend Robin blogged about the numerous benefits of and her budding relationship with these Method cleaners, I opted to give a few a try during my last trip to Target. I picked up the almond hardwood floor cleaner and lavender surface cleaner. Both smell fantastic and the best part? They are natural and non-toxic. My floors look and smell great, and S.'s high chair is super clean and lightly scented. I don't have to worry about her touching the highchair and then putting fingers in her mouth now. I can't wait to try the rest of the line.

Has anyone else tried Method products and loved them? I'm so intrigued now.
