stephmodo: Crossing to Safety

Crossing to Safety

• 20 January 2009

This is the perfect time of year to revisit one of my all-time favorite books...Crossing to Safety by Wallace Stegner. It is the only book I've read multiple times, in fact. So, if you're looking for a good read (also a great way to cure the January doldrums!), consider giving it a try.

Back me up sistahs.

  1. I also enjoyed "Where The Bluebird Sings to the Lemonade Springs" by Wallace Stegner. Not a novel, but a wonderful read for anyone who loves the West. By the way, the matryoshka party was adorable.

  3. We reorganized the bookshelves upstairs by genre last night and I put the stegners next to each other- crossing to safety and angle of repose. Even though I just read Crossing to Safety last year I was really thinking of picking it up again! It just takes me to another place and time that I love...

  6. Oh, I loved this book when I read it the first time - wow, that was 2002! - so yes, I must go back and read it again. Thanks for reminding me of it! (And I recently re-read Angle of Repose, and it meant many different things to me the second time than it did the first. Love books like that, that speak to you in different ways at different points in your life.)

  8. Oh gosh, it's been many years since I read this book - the first Stegner book I ever read. It is still my favorite of his, though I know Angle of Repose is more famous (and it was certainly an amazing book). Big Rock Candy Mountain nearly did me in though - it was so heartbreaking I haven't read a Stegner book since!

  9. Would it be a good vacation book? I'm dreaming of Spring Break in Mexico! I've never read a book by that author, but you've mentioned him before.

  11. When asked my favorite book, sometimes I say Angle of Repose, and sometimes I say Crossing to Safety. It's just too hard to choose between them.
