This Week's Links to Love

• 31 October 2011

A few of my favorites on the web recently...

Love the insightful dating tips and marriage tips on A Blog About Love.  Danny and Mara recently found each other after their first marriages didn't work out and I appreciate how open they are about what they've learned along the way.  They cut the fluff and talk about real stuff.  Consider it cheap therapy :)

Carrie threw a darling Pie Party recently and it made me want to put those pie boxes to good use.  November could definitely be a great month for a pie party...

I adore these vases...because sometimes you don't want to see the stems {via Sunset mag}.

Heather shares my love for all things pumpkin related and I think we all need to try her Pumpkin French Toast.  Hello stretchy pants!

Really enjoying the mesh of food, photography and travel over at La Buena Vida these days.  I discovered Nicole's amazing blog after she started following me on Twitter (which is a great place for new discoveries--you should jump on!).  Her blog gives me just a tidge of wanderlust.

Salade Niçoise, Breadcrumbs + the Best Roast Chicken Recipe

It occurred to me this weekend that I haven't shared any of the recipes I posted on Cafe Zupas this month.  Oops! So what that means is that I have more than one to share with you today--a  combination of old and new favorites and definitely what I'd call "keepers".  Enjoy!

Salade Niçoise with a Shallot Vinaigrette - During the workshop with Aran, I created a variation of this classic French meal for lunch one day. The sun shone outside and we gathered around a table on the lawn to enjoy every bite.   Added bonus: picky eaters will appreciate being able to pick and choose just what they want to eat.  I made a mental note to make a Salade Niçoise once a month from here on out.  It was just that good.

Lemon Herb Roast Chicken  - my go-to recipe for company and it makes your home/apartment smell amazing!!  It's basically a one-pot meal so it makes for a simplified evening of entertaining.

How to Make Homemade Breadcrumbs - because good ones are so hard to find and making your own is so darn easy.  Why, oh why did I not do this earlier? This week I plan on making something yummy with a batch I recently made...I'll keep you posted!

I hope these 3 recipes bring you a few great nights in the kitchen!  Have fun and be sure to listen to some great music while you cook--it'll make your food taste that much better :)  I always enjoy oldies, Buena Vista Social Club or Puccini (random, I know).  In fact, I'd love to know what music you enjoy listening to when you cook...what are your favorites?

The Best Halloween

• 29 October 2011

It's the Saturday before Halloween and last-minute Halloween preparations are in the works around here (we are banking heavily on our "dress up" bin coming through here).  Like all parents and caregivers, I am not only hoping to survive Halloween, but I'm hoping to make it a great Halloween--maybe even our best Halloween yet.  Really, what we all need is just to have some fun and feel a little like a kid again (I may even make an attempt at dressing up...we shall see).  In honor of the impending holiday, I gathered my 4 favorite Halloween posts ever on this blog and put them all in one tidy place for you (see below).  I hope you all have a fun holiday, that no major mishaps happen, and that we can all trick or treat without precipitation!  Wahoo!

How to trade meaningful experiences for Halloween candy after the night's binge fest is over (we call it "Solving the Halloween Conundrum" in these parts).  We've done this 2 years straight in our family and it's now an official tradition my kids ask for each year.  Major win-win here parents!

If you want to throw together a last-minute Halloween party, here is my party plan for inspiration and details.

Hip Halloween candy ideas if you want to move past the Kit Kats and Snickers.

And last, my version of Martha Stewart's Pumpkin/Gourd Toadstools.  They are one of my favorite Autumn traditions and would be darling for the month of November too!

Ticket Kitchen {Hot Chocolate on a Stick Party}

• 28 October 2011

I'm starting to work up the courage to actually throw some sort of holiday fête this year and a couple of ideas are flowing right now.  One is to host a hot chocolate party with these hot chocolate sticks from Ticket Kitchen.  They literally melt into a cup of something decadent and delicious...oh man are they good! Also, these hot chocolate sticks would look so pretty lined up on a table and I know it would be fun to present an unexpected treat to guests.  In fact, the more I think about this idea, the more I like it!

For those of you who have tasted Ticket Kitchen's Hot Chocolate Sticks, what is your favorite flavor?  I am leaning towards Salted Caramel...:)

Light-Filled Modern Farmhouse Kitchen

• 27 October 2011

Be still my heart.  I feel kitchen envy like I haven't felt for some time now and for a non-white kitchen to boot! (okay, so it's sort of white, but really it's cream...and yellow...)  I would love to curl up on that cozy banquette, or cook a meal for my family on that Wolf stove.  Also, look at all that storage under the seating area...perfect for rarely used appliances and dishes.  I'm also eyeing those comfy cushions for my Tolix stools--why didn't I know about those earlier?  What a great idea!

p.s. these images are from Houzz, a new-ish website showcasing homes, gardens, and everything beautiful to fill them with.  I create an ideabook for them once per month and this month I gathered 20 of the best modern rugs on the web.  If you're in the market for an area rug, take a peek.  I hope to save you hours of research!

A Birthday Gift for You

• 25 October 2011

I know a lovely woman named Gail who loves to give gifts to others on her birthday and her example is something that I think of every year on my own birthday.  Witnessing that kind of goodness is really an incredible experience. Surely she was the happiest person at the party and it was apparent that she felt true joy as she shared what she had with others.

Today, in honor of Gail, I'd like to offer each of you free PRIORITY shipping and handling on all domestic orders over $35, as I turned 35 yesterday (international orders will receive a birthday discount too).  Now is a good time to stock up on individual pie boxes and deluxe red & white twine for the holidays.  Please note that quantities are quite limited on the latter.  Shipping will be refunded after the order is placed.

You can check out all of my fun packaging and party goods over here.  Enjoy and thank you again for your support and good wishes.  I am so grateful!

How to Make Your Own Salt

Today, over birthday lunch at local favorite Boat Street Cafe, my husband and I discussed the stimulating subject of "salt" (ha!) and what we think is the best salt in the world. Our conversation immediately reminded me of this beautiful post my friend Ashley wrote about making salt with her kids in nearby Puget Sound.  She wrote the post a few weeks ago, but I cannot get it out of my head and just had to share it with you.  You can peek at her appropriately-entitled blog, Not Without Salt to read just how she did it...I think you'll be pretty darn impressed too!

Creating a Stuffed Animal From Your Child's Drawing

• 24 October 2011

This idea is too cute!  A Canadian studio called Child's Own will take your child's drawing and make a precious plush toy out of it...I love it!  Something like this would make a darling gift--one you and your child would never forget.  And even if you don't have children, do take a peek at the studio's flicker stream...you'll get such a kick out of the many drawings-turned-animals/dolls/toys/etc.  After perusing the site I'm now wondering what my kids would create...heaven knows it would be hilarious!

Real Life Home No.11: Rubyellen of Cakies

• 21 October 2011

Every now and then, in the middle of my day, an image or a thought I've seen/read online will pop into my head.  And more often than not, the source of this inspiration is Rubyellen's blog, "Cakies".  I admire her style, optimism, faith and approach to food.  And because she now has 4 kids, I get her that way too. Today I am so happy to share with you images of her beautiful home in California!  What a treat to peek into her living space and to really get a feel for how she decorates and what she cherishes most (outside of her beautiful family of course!).

For those of you just tuning in, this series showcases living spaces decorated by people who are not formally-trained interior designers; people who mix new finds with antiques and secondhand pieces from Craigslist (or the like). People who have figured out, on their own, what looks and feels good in their living space.

 Here, Rubyellen describes her style:

I love old things. To me, they just have so much character and tell such a wonderful story, especially the more dinged up and chippy something is! Thus, almost all of our furniture, except maybe 5 pieces in the entire house, are vintage. We frequently go to all the local flea markets and fill our home that way. It definitely takes a bit of time in finding the perfect piece for something, but this way our home is only filled with things we absolutely love and are unique!

My decorating motto is the more scratches and rust something has, the more I love it! We really love things looking worn and loved. My friends make fun of me and call me a vintage snob because although there are great vintage reproductions out there (and for a much cheaper price), I still would pay a bit more to have the real thing. Vintage is really one of a kind! And don't worry, we lead test everything before we bring it into our home. We want to make sure that a piece is safe for our children to be around, their safety always comes first.

Are Rubyellen's girlies lucky or what?  I personally love the vintage posters, globes, and wire baskets on the wall...they all add so much personality to the space (as if there wasn't enough already though!).

Rubyellen professes to have a soft spot for French garden furniture (vintage bien sur!).  She adores the metal, colorful patina and rustiness found in those pieces.  Back in college, Rubyellen spotted a similar style of furniture in a copy of Victoria magazine and told herself, "This is what my house will look like".  When she started seeing vintage garden furniture at flea markets, she found it difficult to resist scooping the pieces up for her own home, and honestly who can blame her?  The look is darling, particularly for a home filled with 5 little ladies!

Simple playrooms are my favorite.

Every corner of her home is bursting with creativity, texture and color.  I'm in awe!

Many thanks to Rubyellen for sharing her home with us amidst all the life changes she's experienced recently.  I feel wholly inspired!

Here's your chance to catch up on other living spaces featured in the "Real Life Home Series".  Enjoy!

Minted Autumn Giveaway

• 19 October 2011

Congratulations Erica...your number came right up!  I hope you enjoy your gift card and many thanks again to Minted for sponsoring such a fantastic giveaway.

Today is a good day for a giveaway...I can feel it.  Are you ready to take a gander at taking home a $100 gift card to Minted?  If you haven't heard, Minted is one of the classiest places on the web for well-designed stationery, labels, stamps, announcements, etc.  Think: fine paper, rich inks and fresh designs.  I loved Baby Gray's birth announcement from Minted, and lately am enjoying their address labels like crazy (15% off promo code for all things baby-related is LITTLEONES fyi).  I can't get enough of NOT writing out my return address every.single.time. I'm at the post office.  Plus, I love that they wrap around the card--such a clever idea.

Will you choose one of these Halloween cards?  I know a lot of people who love Halloween more than any other holiday and a holiday Halloween card would be a great way to share the more spooky and/or devilish side of you :)  Enjoying this non-traditionalist suggestion?  Well, how 'about this one...about six years ago I sent out Thanksgiving cards instead of Christmas cards and really fell in love with that tradition (guess who enjoyed her December?).

Adding in coordinating skinny address labels would be a nice finishing touch too.  They definitely gussy up an average envelope in a colorful way.  I use these all the time!  And one last suggestion...these minibook holiday cards.  So perfect for the family with more than one image to share!

Regardless of what you choose, you will most certainly have fun shopping the site.  There is so much to love!  Check out the giveaway guidelines below, and then leave your comment to enter.  Bonne chance my friends~

Walnut Groves + Star Gazing

• 17 October 2011

Last night, as I transferred a few things from my car to house, I paused to look up at the stars twinkling in the sky.  Even though we live in Seattle proper, we do live in a quiet neighborhood (the best of both worlds!) and as I enjoyed that brief moment of silence I thought of where I was last week, and the time I stopped to look at the stars one evening after returning "home" from dinner in a nearby village.  Only a little more than a week apart, but moments far different from each other to be sure.  It's pretty surreal to even think about what I experienced that week...my "normal" life is quite different.  My heart is spilling over with gratitude.

This particular adventure in France was unlike previous trips as this time I was not only there without any family members, including my kiddos; but, I didn't have any house projects either.  Instead I was able to truly enjoy the area and savor my surroundings in a new way, i.e. actually have the time to stop and pick walnuts off a tree.  I thought to myself, "this is how it must be for our guests when they stay at La Maisonnette".  Let me tell you, it was so relaxing!  I felt and still feel so inspired by this experience...thank you for going with the flow here as I post a few more times about it.  I have so much to share with you.

In the meantime, you've got to check out what our workshop guests have been sharing on their own blogs and websites.  Aran and I have been blown away by the beautiful images (all very different from each other too) and heartwarming accounts.  I think you'll enjoy the additional perspectives and a morning's worth of "pretty". Here they are...

Olivia - her images of Beynac blow me away.  Her perspective is so unique and the way she captured the Sarlat market in Autumn was breathtaking.

Kimberly - our picnic next to the Dordogne River and a beautiful image of our guests with the Valley of the 5 Castles behind them.

Jen - beautiful images from our workshop plus lots of candid images of Aran doin' her thing.

Romina - comic relief and a delightful play-by-play of some of the details the rest of us have yet to share :)

Lorna - more lovely market photos (shallots and garlic never looked so good) and my favorite cheese plate photo of the week.

Sanda - red geraniums (so French!) and images straight out of a movie...like Chocolat...which was filmed in lovely Beynac.

Maje

• 14 October 2011

Walking through Paris department store Printemps last week made me feel like a giddy school girl.  And while I'm sure it would've been even more fun to go on a shopping spree, I still had a great time just browsing.  One could describe the experience as a real-life version of Pinterest--lots of eye candy in one location :)  I always enjoy getting a sense of what's fashionable in Paris, and then keeping my eyes peeled for similar looks that are more in my budget.

Hands down one of my favorites was the Maje boutique (they also have free standing stores in Paris as well).  The minimal palette was simple yet striking {the tomato red is my favorite} and the classic lines appealing too.  I fell in love all over again with Peter Pan collars...they are just darling paired with a menswear-inspired pant.  Just the perfect amount of femininity here girls.

Also noteworthy:

1. Maje will soon have an online presence here in the US...until then New Yorkers can take advantage of their upcoming debut in the Big Apple.  Lucky ducks.

2. The model you see on the home page is romance novelist Danielle Steele's daughter.  Random.

Last, this was my first time going into Printemps (somehow we always end up at Galeries Lafayette down the road).  It was fun to note the differences between the two...if you've been to both, what is your opinion? Which do you like better? }

The Field House

• 13 October 2011

Perhaps one of the most carefully curated boutiques I've ever come across sits right here in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood.  It's called The Field House and it's a dedicated space for guys--specifically the kind that likes to hang around the outdoors-y, eclectic and food lovin' Pacific Northwest.  The story behind the shop is actually quite moving and nods to the Depression Era when the owner's grandmother Mable visited her local "Field House" to take classes and to make crafts that inspired and shaped the rest of her life.

Like an art exhibit, the store changes its appearance frequently, so chances are when you stop by, it won't look like this anymore.  Although I hope they at least keep the old timey soda pop bar, {this is where it starts feeling like a general store!}.  I've got to get my husband in for one of their root beers :)  Also, the easy-going staff is always friendly and helpful, but never pushy...an approach that's always appreciated.  Please note that if you try phoning, the call may go through to their sister store, Blackbird.

To Market

• 12 October 2011

One of my favorite experiences in France is the market.  It doesn't matter if they are selling birds, flowers, antiques or food--it's all wonderful, different and visually stimulating.  I'll take a good French market in any form!

Last week we took our group to Sarlat, a large Medieval town about 10 or 15 minutes away from Beynac.  Every Wednesday and Saturday (with Saturdays being the largest and busiest), locals and tourists mingle as the best produce for the best price is sought out.  The theme of the day was "market to table" so Aran, Nadia and I toted our friend Ouafaa's beautiful basket and filled it to the brim with yummy treats to eat and photograph.  The weather was outstanding that morning, as it was all week (hallelujah!) and while a few of my favorite vendors were missing, it was still glorious to be there...

My market favorites down in the Dordogne included Charlotte strawberries (which we caught at the end of the season...wahoo!), acacia honey, fruit rouges jam, walnuts and sweet, little potimarron (in the US it's called kuri squash).  Half of these we enjoyed immediately and the other half we tucked in our suitcases with all our rinsed out yogurt jars (hello pots de cremes!). When we lived in France during our renovation, walking around this very market was my weekly respite.  Despite having visited numerous times already, it still thrills me every, single time.  I feel like there is always something new to discover and I never take for granted what an absolute delight it is to be there.
