Air Plants

• 02 July 2012

This past year I've developed an interest in tillandsias--these incredible plants, also known as "air plants", that survive and thrive without soil.  I've added them to terrariums and small vessels here and there in our little home.  They really do make a subtle, but interesting statement and I absolutely love the effect.  Plus, you don't have to be an avid gardener or have a "green thumb" per se.  All you need is a reliable tutorial :)

You can find air plants at West Elm (in stores), the Palm Room (in Seattle), your local nursery and online too.  They typically run between $6 and $8 each.  If you've had any personal experience with caring for or decorating with air plants, I'd love to hear about them!

  1. I was just reading about these yesterday! We have poor lighting in our house and I have a black thumb anyway, so I was looking for an alternative to a more traditional house plant. I love how modern these look. Thanks for the links!

  3. Air Plants are great for a black thumb like me! My husband and I have tried a variety of indoor plants, and unfortunately didn't have much luck in having them survive more than a couple weeks. A friend of ours recommended air plants, and we ended up getting a pre-designed kit from Air Plant Design Studio. We ended up getting this one(http://www.air-plants.com/collections/air-plant-kits/products/large-glass-gobe-kit)and couldnt be happier with our purchase! 3 months later, and they look great!

  4. I want to try these kind of plants. Maybe I can take care of them given they don't need soil and stuff. Hmmm.
