Displaying + Storing Your Child's Art

This post has been a long time in the making. Ever since reading Downtown Chic, I've felt a renewed interest in displaying my children's art in a cool way. Although it's a project I could've tackled in one long night, I decided to spread it out over a few weeks. It feels good to finally be done...at least for child #1...now I need to do the same thing for child #2! These preschoolers bring home a heck of a lot of art, no?

Step 1: When my kids come home with art, I typically write the date, which child created it (we do have 3 kiddos running around and although you think you'll always remember these details, you don't), and what it is. Sometimes the subject is obvious, yes, but many times it isn't (think: "it's a picture of mommy? wow!") If there is a funny story or explanation from my child about the art, I write a quick phrase on that as well. Then, I throw them into a basket. I do this everyday until the pile becomes out-of-hand and I'm forced to deal with the issue :)

Step 2: I laid out my child's art across the floor and asked her to choose 10 of her favorite pieces. On top of that I added my own 10 favorites--things I know she'd enjoy looking at as an adult.

Step 3: I scanned and then saved the images in a folder on my computer.

Step 4: Next, I piled them nicely together and wrapped them in twine. I then placed the wrapped stack in my child's "special box"--a box of keepsakes and treasures for her to enjoy throughout her life.

Step 5: Open Photoshop (note: you do not have to be a Photoshop expert to do this). Open saved images and resize them to be the same width (I sized mine to 350 pixels wide). Play around with an arrangement on your computer until you are pleased with the composition.

Step 6: Open a new file, this will be your blank slate. Make the background white.

Step 7: Start dragging your images to the new canvas and watch your child's art come to life again!

Step 8: Print image and frame.

Here is what I came up with:

Online Lighting Resources

It's taken awhile, but I'm finally at the point where I recognize the major impact lighting has on a space. If this weren't true, I wouldn't have driven 12 hours just for the sake of procuring these lights for La Maisonnette. Truly, when you walk into a room, it's the lighting you notice first. Because stylish lighting tends to be on the pricier end, we often ignore this important design feature. I've learned that it's worth saving up for (even if it takes awhile) and that good deals can be had...especially if you do your homework.

Buying fixtures online versus in a retail store often saves a few bucks. Try these online sources and see if you can't find something you love at a competitive price:

Lighting Universe (everything pictured above is from LU; great selection; reasonable prices)

Circa Lighting (make sure you check out the web specials)

Affordable Lighting (if you find something you love elsewhere, contact them first; apparently they'll quote you the "best price")

Restoration Hardware (I have to admit I love their lighting...when it's on sale)

Lumens (be sure to hit the sample and clearance sections)

Unica Home (I find it easiest to "browse by style")

Y Lighting (mostly iconic/designer pieces; the best deals are in the closeouts + overstocks section)

Zuppa Toscana

My sisters-in-law all make a variation of this soup and all of them are delicious. I've discovered it's just a matter of how much of this or that you like. My favorite aspect (besides how yummy it tastes) is that it incorporates kale, which is apparently one of the most nourishing vegetables around. Oh, and did I mention your kids will love it? I've seen some pretty picky eaters down this soup. How 'bout that?

You can find the recipe over at Zupas today.

Fishs Eddy

When we visited New York last, my friend Kelsey recommended I stop by Fishs Eddy after wandering around the Union Square Farmer's Market. It was an excellent tip...this shop is now one of my NY favorites. If you're remotely into reasonably-priced housewares (including those that are vintage-inspired), then definitely stop by--it's convenient location right across the street from ABC Carpet & Home should seal the deal :)

Another New York favorite is the French Culinary Institute's training restaurant, L'Ecole. We enjoyed a lovely 3-course lunch for only $25. For fine dining in New York (or anywhere for that matter!), this is an incredible deal.

Also, many readers offered up their budget hotel recommendations for New York...valuable advice indeed. If you are planning a trip to the Big Apple, check 'em out here.

And of course, you must not miss the "New York: Reader Favorites" post...a list like this is priceless! Especially if this is not your first trip there and don't feel pressure to see all the touristy sites, i.e. you've-been-there-and-done-that. Next time, I'll know where to eat and how to spend my time--can't wait!

Recchitui

I LOVE the grapefruit tarragon chocolate over at Recchitui in San Francisco's Ferry Building. It's my absolute favorite chocolate there...the flavors just pop like magic! My question is...are dessert and drink recipes as good as his chocolates ? Has anyone ever tried them? If so, what was your experience?

Pretty One-Piece Swimsuits

It's so fun to start thinking about warm sunshine, the beach (or pool), and the smell of Hawaiian Tropic wafting through the air...especially during this time of year. Plus, all the good swimsuits seem to sell out well before they are actually needed, so I say let's give them a look-see now.

I'm a one-piece kind of gal, so here are some of my favorites on the web these days:

Displaying Books No.1

I miss the built-in bookcases of our old 1930's apartments and long for some of my own again...someday. It would be so nice to unpack all those boxes of books sitting in our basement. It's a cryin' shame to keep them all cooped up. In the meantime I will make do with what I have and look to these images for inspiration.

Next week I'll posts "no.2" and share more pretty pictures...

Grouping books by color...and love the idea of hanging art on a bookcase.

Can't find an end table you love in your budget? Use a stack of books! Also love the idea of displaying a large book with particularly lovely pages on a console table or sideboard.

ReadyMade suggests turning a vintage suitcase into a bookcase...but I really like the idea of tall bookshelves complete with a ladder. Maybe when the kids are older :)

The perfect solution for not-so-pretty books (including paperbacks that have seen better days)--display them turned around, spine showing. If they were books you didn't care to reference, but couldn't bear parting with, it's a good solution! And this apartment featured in Living a handful of years ago has never left my mind. It's gorgeous in every way and I love the way the books are displayed on simple, white shelves and below the coffee tables as well.

More Lemon Curd

It wouldn't be winter without me talking about lemon curd, now would it? Today I am sharing my recipe for lemon curd over at Zupas, which I just realized I've never shared before on this blog! Oh boy...it's time I did.

I also included suggestions as to how to put that yummy curd to use once you make it (don't worry, it's easy!). If you have any recipe ideas yourself, do share. I'm still on the hunt for a great lemon curd tart...hint, hint :)

Last-Minute Valentine Ideas

Alright folks...just one more day for Valentine prep! Here are some of my favorite {simple} ideas for the occasion a la Martha. Some of these ideas I've had in my binder since 2004 so it's nice to finally put them to use and share them with you. What I love about each of these tiny projects is how easy they are to pull off and how visually appealing they all are. As an added bonus, many of the required items are available at a regular grocery store.

1. Type out romantic quotes in a Word document. Print. Trim paper using scissors or a paper cutter. Wrap around box and add one piece of ribbon.

2. Make sugar cookies (if you don't have an "x" or an "o" just use hearts!). Wrap in box with colored tissue paper to dress is up. Tie with ribbon.

3. All you need here is chocolate and I'd venture to guess most of us have that on hand! Oh, and a ziploc bag. That's it! Find directions here.

4. I love the idea of taking this idea and making it into something special for a non-sweets lover or diabetic. Instead of using candy, opt for fruit or vegetables instead. Canteloupe, melon, pomegranate seeds, berries, celery, carrots, or anything else colorful would do. I'm also loving the fancy salt version down below. I love cooking with nice salt, it really does make a difference.

5. Head to Target. Pick up large bouquet of flowers and big bag of Jelly Bellies (or conversation hearts--see right). Put to use those random vases and mason jars at home for this project. You could even use a plastic cup for the center since it's held into place by the jelly beans. Easy peasy.

a Jewelry Swap

I planned this jewelry swap for over a year, but never did anything about it until recently. I finally got to the point where I was tired of talking about making it happen, yet not doing anything about it. So I buckled down, put some hours into invitations and preparation, and made it happen! It was a lot of fun and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Inside each invitation I included a little pouch with numbered tags and instructions. Guests attached the tags to the jewelry before the swap. At the swap the jewelry was laid out across a table at random to create an ecclectic look. I placed a strip of paper under each piece of jewelry upon which guests wrote down the #'s (of their own jewelry) they'd be willing to trade for that piece. Then, the owner of that piece of jewelry could glance at the paper, see if anything struck their fancy, and then swap!

Keeping it similar to a silent auction eliminated any potentially awkward situations. We also used a simple lottery system (numbered pieces of paper in a jar) to determine who went to the table first to trade to keep things fair. Any leftover jewelry was donated to a local charity or to our little girls' dress up collections :)

I prepared a simple dessert buffet so we could munch and chat while turns were taken at the jewelry table. I tried a marbled bundt cake from Donna Hay that was okay, Double Lemon Bars (!!) and Pumpkin Cupcakes with Spiced Cream Cheese Frosting (this frosting would be awesome on carrot cake/cupcakes too). A little lemon water and sparkling water kept things clean and simple (you never have to worry about spills with light-colored drinks!). I didn't feel like ironing that night (who am I kidding though...I never feel like ironing), so I just placed everything directly on the table. I think it worked though with all the pretty things spread across the tabletop.

Some of the guests mentioned how fun it would be to expand beyond jewelry to other accessories. I think it's an excellent idea to consider! If any of you end up hosting a variation on this swap, let me know. I'd love to hear your ideas :)

Victoria's Blogger Mashup begins today and if you're looking for some added inspiration, I'd jump on board this train. The mashup will be chugging along for over a month, which is perfect timing, don't you think? Bugle Boy

Oooohh...isn't this dress adorable?! After giving it a test run this week I have to say it's just as gorgeous in person...and as an added bonus it even has hidden pockets...and I always love pockets on a dress. While I didn't don a cute little hat, I did manage to round up a pair of vintage t-straps :)

A note on sizing...on the website it states the dress fits generously, implying you should purchase a size smaller than normal. This is definitely true as long as you are not busty (full C, D, etc.)...for those of you lucky enough to be so, I'd consider opting for your normal size.

If you'd like to enjoy $20 off a purchase of $150+, use coupon code "warminside" upon checking out. Enjoy!

Double Lemon Bars

With citrus season in full swing, I couldn't help but give a nod to my favorite of them all...lemons. These Double Lemon Bars are {hands down} the best lemon bars I've ever consumed. They are made entirely from scratch, uncomplicated and are bright and lemon-y, just the way I like 'em.

You can indulge in them over at Zupas today.

xoxo

When it comes to holiday decorations, I like to keep things simple and inexpensive. This year, per my son's request, I wanted to put up something for Valentine's Day before the big day arrived (typically I only decorate right on V-day). I decided to put my 2009 Snow & Graham calendar to use and die-cut hearts for a simple banner. I can never bring myself to throw away those calendars...they are so lovely (last year I made these). I put a needle and thread through the hearts and tied them to these itty bitty hooks screwed into the base of our mantle. Total cost: $1.37 (the cost of using the scrapbooking store's die-cut machine).

Next up: handmade valentines with the kiddos. Since their attention span for crafts tends to be around an hour, making 25 Valentines seemed a little daunting for a young child. So I decided to purchase these French-inspired cuties for classmates and then help them make 5-10 Valentines for out-of-state relatives. It felt like the right balance and made for a fun, stress-free activity together. Sometimes having realistic expectations is half the battle :)

And last: "grownup" Valentines I made alongside my children. Last year when flea-marketing with Rachel in Paris, I found a stack of miniature vintage French playing cards for sale. After negotiating with the vendor for 10 or 15 minutes, he finally gave them to me for a decent price. I wasn't sure what to do with them until I spotted this tear in my inspiration binder. Playing-Card Valentines? Perfect. Especially since I already had a couple of glassine envelopes on hand (I'm all about trying to use up what I have to avoid unnecessary purchases).

Two other simple favorites that I'm head-over-heels for....1. these brownie bags and 2. these miniature candy boxes. Both are not-to-be-missed and definitely worthy of a bookmark!

Whidbey Island

In case you live in the Seattle area, or are heading there soon for a family vacay, you should consider a day trip to Whidbey Island. It is a wonderful place to spend time as a family and very picturesque--your kids will go wild when you drive your car onto a large ferry :) If you enjoy antiquing, you'll be interested in knowing we passed a few thrift and antique stores that begged to be searched. It was almost painful to not stop!

When it comes to eating lunch or dinner, make sure you eat at one of the delicious eateries in Coupeville (we hit the deli and were not disappointed by the homemade shakes or pulled pork sandwich). Within just a quarter mile you'll find 5 restaurants that all boast excellent reviews.

And last, hit Fort Casey with the kiddos. They'll have the chance to play hide n' seek in old WWII bunkers, explore a lighthouse and throw sticks and rocks into the ocean. For my kids this equaled heaven. The views are amazing as well so go, go, go!

Lisa Leonard Designs

It can be difficult finding a tasteful, sentimental gift...one that the receiver would actually use/wear/display/enjoy. Lisa recently created a personalized circle necklace for my mom that fits all of the above criterion. She loves it and wears it almost daily {insert huge sigh of relief}. I also love this simple baby spoon...what a perfect gift! It would look fantastic in one of Darcy's memory boxes, don't you think?

Alt Design Summit Wrap Up

Has it seriously been almost two weeks since Alt? Yikes. Time is flying and I am probably the very last attendee to mention the fabulous summit. Oh well, better late than never? (I'm finding this is becoming my mantra lately. Sad.)

First of all, I am so excited that something like this actually exists now and will be taking place on an annual basis. Gabrielle (and all the other kirtsy gals) did an amazing job organizing the summit and making it possible for so many design and lifestyle bloggers to meet each other in one setting. It was great to see Gabrielle, Liz, & Susan again--it's been awhile; and awesome to meet Joslyn, Chelsea, Victoria, Maggie, Sheila, Maxwell and Janel for the first time. One day of mixing and mingling with these talented women made for one of my favorite days in a very long time. One thing I noticed about most of the design and lifestyle bloggers is how genuinely nice they all were. I was very happy with this discovery and the sense of community you feel as a result. Can't wait until next year...

Welcome Sycamore Street Press

I'm excited to introduce you to a new sponsor, the lovely Sycamore Street Press, although it's highly likely you've already made their aquaintance over at Real Simple, Good Morning America, Design*Sponge or elsewhere. Using a vintage letterpress, owners Eva & Kirk Jorgensen create all sorts of happy prints, placecards, gift tags, coasters, frame mats and greeting cards. It's no surprise though--their studio is a delightful place to be and Eva & Kirk are not only talented, but really nice too (in case you missed the images of their workspace, you can view them here). Go ahead and give them a look-see...you'll be happy you did :)

Fun Finds in January

Sometimes finding one great thing is enough to make your day...your week...your month...whatever.

1. Ever since spotting this lamp over at Faire Houre, I've been keeping my eye on my local HomeGoods, just hoping that California wasn't the only receiver of such goodness. I popped in one day and spotted it...then spent two days mulling over the potential purchase...only to go back in and give it one more look. Then I spotted the red clearance tag...how could I resist? It has been a long time since I bought something for the house and it needed a little sprucing up.

2. Jenn looked so cute in this top...I couldn't resist picking it up myself (a UO discount helps too). I'm a total sucker for a Peter Pan collar. And polkadots.

What have been some of your recent fun finds? Do share :)

Iconic Aromas

Since perfume is a popular gift around Valentine's Day, I thought it appropriate to pay tribute to a few of our nation's icons along with their corresponding eau de toilette of choice. I'm particularly intrigued by Audrey's fragrance...everything about her exudes style and femininity.

My question for you is, do you have a "signature scent" or do you like to mix it up? If you do have a signature fragrance, what is it?

Mine is Liberté--my husband chose this for me and I'm quite sure I couldn't have picked a better fragrance for myself; plus I love that he spent two hours in Galeries Lafayette trying to find the perfect one.
