Presenting Seasonal Fruit in a Simple Way

• 29 July 2011

One of my favorite sides to serve family and friends is a simple, unadulterated fruit salad that's arranged in a pretty way. When it comes to presentation, good looks score big points! And, you don't have to buy fancy schmancy fruit to pull off a pretty fruit salad with success--even oranges and apples can be cut and arranged on a plate in an attractive way (when they are in season I'll make one and show you exactly what I mean). I find that if I cut up a piece of fruit in a way people aren't accustomed to, or mix in a small amount of an unlikely fruit, then people are more likely to eat it--this is surprisingly true for both children and adults alike! I'm also a big fan of dressing-free salads when it comes to fruit--I feel like any variety can stand on its own.

The above fruit salad was made in less than 5 minutes by combining a handful of Rainier cherries and white currants over a bed of blueberries. White currants are a special berry that is common in France, but not so much here in the US. I was really excited to spot a couple of baskets at a local grocery store and had to snatch one up! Have you ever spotted them where you live?

A few random notes on serving fruit:

1. Allow your fruit to ripen on your counter in a pretty bowl or on a plate. Once it's ripe, place the fruit in the fridge to chill; it doesn't matter if it's bananas, oranges, pineapple or cherries. For whatever reason, when fruit is cold it tastes sooo much better. When I'm prepping a meal, I'll often prepare the fruit first and then throw it in the fridge to chill while I finish up the rest of the food. I tend to press repeat on just about anything that's delicious, simple and make-ahead so we eat a lot of fruit...at least these days when it's so affordable!

2. Like vegetables to a frittata, you can pretty much grab whatever you have on hand and mix it together successfully. Don't spend a lot of energy thinking what works well together--pretty much anything goes!

Korean Craft Supplies

• 27 July 2011

Sally recently introduced me to Korean craft supplies at her lovely packaging workshop last month in Portland; which means instead of just crushing on Japanese supplies, I can now add Korean goodies to the mix. Awesome.

Here are some of my own favorites I thought you might appreciate too. I love how reasonably-priced they are!

Masking Tape Stickers (in the most amazing hues I might add!)

Polkadot Washi Tape / Kraft brown twist ties (I know it's planning ahead, but V-Day lollies?)

New Favorite Spice: Piment d'Espelette

A couple of years ago when all this La Maisonette business began, I struck up a cooking friendship with a Frenchwoman named Danièle Mazet-Delpeuch--one of the most interesting women I've met to date (I've detailed our cooking experiences here, here and here--can you tell I like this lady?). Oh my she is a treasure trove of knowledge and skill! One of the many tips she's given me over the years is regarding a special spice called Piment d'Espelette. It's fast become my new secret spice and I'm sharing the 4-1-1 over at the Cafe Zupas blog, including how to incorporate it into your everyday cooking.

Join me there if you have a minute...I think you're about to meet your new favorite spice :)

How to Read Blogs + Maintain Perspective

• 25 July 2011

This morning I'm having a bit of a late start, but I have a lot on my mind I'd like to pen anyway. I've decided it's high time we revisit Marta's clever and honest post about maintaining a realistic perspective about what we see on blogs. In her classic, witty writing style she shares thoughts on comparison, originality and being supportive, all in a thoughtful and humorous way. The blogosphere is a better place with this eloquent post in its midst. I hope you all read it! Here are a few other thoughts {and tangents quite honestly} that came to my mind after reading Marta's post...

Yes, cute outfits make us feel better when we step out the door; and yes, a well-designed kitchen is probably a dream for many of us (but few of us have our dream kitchen); and yes, we wish all the parties we threw were "blogable" (but alas budget constraints or lack of vision often keep us from having that kind of party), but does it matter? Hanging out socially with friends is really about just being together and connecting. Food and decor is secondary. Yes, it's fun and does make the event feel special; but it's better to get together and not have all the elements perfect than to not get together at all. I have a few friends that understand this mantra well and I admire them for their mature perspective.

So this summer, celebrate being with your family and your friends and remember that all the little details are just added bonuses, but not necessary. If you order pizza or Thai food during a dinner party because the meal you prepared didn't turn out (this happened to me once), then so be it. Guests will simply appreciate being remembered, being invited.

p.s. this is an important topic to me and one I revisit every now and again. In the past I've written a few posts on blogging and comparison--they can be found here and here. As in all archived posts, comments are always open so feel free to share your own thoughts--we will all see them and appreciate them.

Kate Spade for Adeline Adeline European Bicycles

• 22 July 2011

Yippee...a one-stop shop here in the US for all the most beautiful, most practical European bicycles. Now, instead of cruising around several sites, I can just oooh and aaaahh in one convenient location--Adeline Adeline. I really would love to become the kind of person that bikes everywhere as it's such a healthy form of exercise.

My favorites over at Adeline Adeline are the Kate Spade bike (you can't go wrong with Kelly green) and the Bakfiet cargo bikes. I love these! All the moms in Holland biked around the city with these bicycles (see picture here) and I wondered if they were available somewhere in the US. Well, now I know! They are pricey, but still very cool to swoon over.

p.s. did you win the Jylare Ann Photography session? Find out here.

Making Homemade Freezer Jam for the First Time

• 21 July 2011

Over the span of two weeks I've made 10 batches of freezer jam--yep, that's 1-0--all the while wondering why in the world I waited to long to try my hand at what turned out to be a very simple thing to make. To think, I allowed myself to be intimidated by a mere fruit and a few other key ingredients. I feel so silly now! Since I'm a novice "jammer" at this point (is that even a real word?), I started with the basics and made straight up strawberry and raspberry jams. I experimented a little with sugar, honey, lemon and two kinds of pectin. However, I kept my first attempts pretty simple as I am just a beginner. Once I have a chance to sample them all, I'll have a better idea of what tastes best and I'll share my thoughts and recipes with you.

As I putzed around the kitchen cleaning berries, staining tea towels and labeling jars, a few thoughts came to mind I wanted to share:

1. Berry season is relatively short so get out and enjoy them while you can! Pick 'em, eat 'em or at the very least, buy them. They will never be so reasonably priced and so delicious any other time of year.

2. If you haven't made jam before, you need to...like this week. Go out, pick up a box of freezer jam pectin (or no-cook pectin), and follow the instructions on the box. It's that easy. The pectin you'll need is located next to the regular pectin and canning jars.

3. It's important to remember that you can do, make, or be anything you set your mind to. You can teach yourself anything as long as you're willing to put in the time and elbow grease. The well-known adage, "practice makes perfect", exists for a reason :)

And with that I wish you a lovely Thursday!

p.s. if you're interested, I've shared my tips on making freezer jam over here

A Clearance Sale at Olive Juice Kids + a Welcome

• 20 July 2011

I'm very excited to tell you a couple of things today about one of my favorite French-inspired children's brands, Olive Juice Kids. Many of you who've been reading for awhile are probably familiar with this label already as I've mentioned them several times on stephmodo. This is the main reason why is I'm thrilled that Olive Juice Kids is now a sponsor of this blog. Hip hip hooray! You will truly love their well-made and well-styled children's clothes. Promise.

My next tidbit of news is that Olive Juice Kids is hosting an incredible clearance sale right now. You can snag a $60 dollar dress for just $10 or $15 as every piece of clothing on clearance right now is one of those two ridiculously low prices. This type of sale doesn't happen often, so stock up while you can! Plan ahead for next year and the upcoming season by picking up boutique-caliber clothing for chain-store prices.

Olive Juice Kids has adorable French-inspired clothing for babies, girls and boys--so something for every little person really. I love that most of the clothing is sized up to a 16 or 18...it can be so difficult to find age-appropriate clothing these days for the 8-12 crowd. I can honestly say that most of my favorite pieces in my kids' drawers are from Olive Juice Kids and were purchased during one of these amazing sales.

Hop on over to the Olive Juice Kids Clearance Sale and snatch up some great deals for yourself! Prices are good until Monday, but I suggest not waiting until then as many sizes will be sold out.

p.s. my favorite striped tee in the world is also marked down from $82 to $15 (it's from the Petit Bateau line). You absolutely cannot beat that price! The sizing for this tip is a little tricky, but it seems that an XS is a size 14, a S is a size 16, and a M is a size 18. Keep in mind this isn't official sizing, just a personal observation :) If in doubt, certainly refer to the measurements on the Olive Juice Kids website.

Hosting an Outdoor Movie Party

I thought the ditty on backyard movies, in recently-created online design magazine Covet Garden, was short, sweet, and just the right amount of inspiration. The article outlined what you'd need and where to find it and now all I can think about is setting up something like this for my kids this summer.

What about you, have you ever set up an outdoor movie? Do you have any logistical tips or pointers you'd like to share with those of us who've never set up this type of activity? I bet Craigslist would be a great place to pick up a projector for a reasonable price. I think I'll go check on that...

Birthday Party Ideas

• 19 July 2011

Since all of my children were born in the winter, I don't have any parties to plan at the moment. But I wish I did! Because summertime is truly the perfect time to throw a party. Outdoors + water + sun + a mess-that's-easy-to-clean-up = bliss for the party planner.

So, here are some of the party ideas floating around my head right now--all centered around postage stamps in fact. You may think it silly to plan a party around a postal stamp, but it's actually a fun way to get the ball rolling and to add a thoughtful detail. For me it all started in college when those pretty Georgia O'Keefe poppy stamps came out and I just happened to have the same print in blank card form. It sort of became an addiction--matching postage stamps to invitations and such. I may have even paid an extra 30 cents a wedding invitation just so I could have lovely, matching stamps on the exterior envelope...(go ahead, roll your eyes, my dad did!).

1. Wizard of Oz Birthday Party - Think Kansas stamps, red glitter shoes and a yellow brick road leading to the treat table. A great party idea for both boys and girls so if your child wants to invite his/her whole class...(good luck). I also like the idea of a Halloween party planned around a Wizard of Oz theme. Extra credit: bring a real puppy in a basket and pretend he goes by the name of Toto.

2. Is a night of charades is in order next weekend? The kind where you munch on yummy appetizers and have grownup conversations while the babes slumber? Well then you must invite bonified actors and actresses like Ronald and Katherine. Or, perhaps the Cinema Stars Bundle is more up your alley?

3. Cowboy Birthday Party - I threw one of these a few years ago for my little guy and so did Danyelle recently. Peek at our parties here and here for inspiration. These cowboy-ish stamps would've been great for the invitations. I can also see them being a fun addition to a camping themed birthday party or a scavenger hunt themed party too.

4. Starting a book club? Send out these hilarious letterpress invitations and adorn them with some handsome Mark Twains. Sometimes it's nice to go all out on that first club meeting...and a little humor goes a long way! Extra credit: gift your new members a copy of your favorite Jane Austen book and attach these tags to the nicely-wrapped packages. Aaah, Pemberley.

5. Indy 500 - Fast and Furious is the name and setting up race tracks everywhere is the game. Add in these awesome classic Indy 500 stamps for the party invitations to set the mood. Here is a sweet Indy-themed party to stir up some inspiration found at new-to-me-blog Ruby Red Studio.

6. When I planned my son's fairly recent Outer Space Birthday party, I used vintage stamps on the invitations; but, if you don't want to pay the extra postage (vintage, unused stamps sell for more than face value) then these are a fantastic option. You must check out the online version of the Greenwood Space Travel Supply store. It's so funky. Seattleites, you must stop by in person!

French Summertime Snack

When you spot beautiful, very reasonably-priced radishes at farmer's markets, do you ever think, "wow, those are gorgeous, but what in the world would I do with radishes"? Yes? Well, I've thought the same thing myself!

In France they use radishes quite often and I'm sharing my favorite French summertime snack today over at the Cafe Zupas blog. Enjoy!

Stripes {+ other Lovelies} on Sale

• 18 July 2011

I looked for something to wear the other day and realized that what I really want to wear everyday are stripes. and more stripes. and maybe this pretty floral blouse on sale, but I'm sure the next day I'd be back to stripes again. Aaahhh! Must.branch.out (do any of you have the same affection towards this classic pattern?). In the meantime though, enjoy some of these fantastic pieces on sale!! Yay for stripes on sale.

Above pieces from the Anthropologie sale going on now (here and here). Also fantastic is this striped hoodie from recently-discovered Vineyard Vines--a boutique over on Martha's Vineyard. Regular prices are definitely out-of-range for me, but right now they are offering an additional 40% off their sale prices making it budget-friendly.

p.s. prepping another "real life home" post to share with you in the next couple of days...stay tuned!

New York's Dîner en Blanc

• 14 July 2011

Yet another way we Americans seek to imitate the French...:)

Have you heard of Paris' Dîner en Blanc? It's a private, impromptu pique-nique where everyone dresses in white, brings their own dinner, and after a few hours of eating, drinking, and making merry, they pack up their mess and say bonne nuit. The trick is that no one knows where it's going to be until the last moment, no one knows who is in charge of it (you apparently have to know the right people?), and therefore it's unclear just how to be invited. I have to admit, it's look downright spectacular and I'm very impressed with reports that such a large crowd leaves their picnic areas so tidy afterwards.

Interestingly enough, the American version is in the works and is slated to take place on August 25, 2011 in New York City (of course). The main differences are 1. municipal authorities will be involved (they are planning the location) and 2. instead of being completely private, half the guest list is open invitation. While I love the idea of trying to host a large, spontaneous picnic like the French, I wonder if it's going to be as fun if government officials are involved. Isn't half the fun just showing up without anyone knowing? Also, I'm curious if we will leave the party grounds as clean as our friends over the Pond. I can't wait to read the reports!

You can read more about Dîner en Blanc in a NYT article, and also find out how to be invited. Do any of you know more about the Dîner en Blanc? Have you been?

Update: Jordan created something similar in Versailles today...doesn't it look fun?

Thank you Christelle for the heads up on NY's Dîner en Blanc!

Valhalla: Handbags of my Dreams

• 13 July 2011

Swooning over these ga-ga-ga-gorgeous handmade handbags out of Brooklyn studio Valhalla. They aren't cheap, but like most things handmade, they'd likely last a good ten years with a few leather conditioning treatments every 2 years. Honestly, I can't remember a time anytime recently when I've laid eyes on a more stunning, well-crafted handbag...even the inside is to-die-for! Sigh...

U-Pick Strawberries + a Shortcake

• 12 July 2011

Last weekend my family and I visited a berry farm and walked away with 17 whopping pounds of strawberries, having no definitive ideas as to how I was going to put them to use. But since the weather was amazing (this is huge in Seattle!), I was downright giddy and didn't worry too much; so off we went with 2 very large flats of luscious, Shuksan strawberries. Yum...

First up...strawberry shortcake...because that is probably my favorite strawberry dessert of all. It's hard to beat made-from-scratch cream biscuits, lightly sweetened whipped cream and copious amounts of strawberries...at least in my book. If you are of a similar mindset, take a peek at this week's Cafe Zupas post.

Edor Jewelry {Delicate +Pretty}

• 11 July 2011

I'm completely head over heels for these delicate necklaces from new sponsor Edor Jewelry; in fact, I can't remember the last time I spotted jewelry that I liked as much as these pretties (favorites being the dash, bar and vintage lockets). The easy-on-the-wallet prices--think $20/necklace--only add to the allure. It's amazing that it's even possible to find gorgeous, handmade jewelry for such budget-friendly prices! I've had this shop bookmarked for sometime now--since spotting Edor over at Simple Lovely--and once you take a peek yourself you'll see why it's a favorite.

Camping on the Olympic Peninsula

• 10 July 2011

This weekend my husband took our oldest son camping out on the Olympic Peninsula--a place that's been calling our name since we moved here 8 months ago. We are so intrigued with this area and it's not because we are Twilight fans (still haven't seen the movies or read the books...). Based on the amount of gorgeous scenery we get to enjoy every day here in Seattle, I had an inkling this neck of the woods would be spectacular. But, when my husband showed me the images he snapped on his phone, I was completely blown away, despite the fact that I already had high hopes for the area. If I wasn't convinced that Baby Gray would try to eat every pebble on that beach I'd pack my bags tomorrow!

If you've camped in the Pacific NW, where do you like to go?

Family Reunion Tees You'll Wear Again

• 07 July 2011

A friend and I were recently discussing an upcoming family reunion and the overpriced, unattractive shirt she was going to have to don {and pay for} that week. It never feels good to waste money for any reason, so when I spotted Angela's snappy family reunion tees featured on Black Eiffel last week, I had to give them a mention over here as well. With so many family get-togethers taking place this summer, this type of awesomeness needs to be shared with as many reunion-attenders as possible :)

Japanese Tape Birthday Cake Cards

Looking for another way to use that fabulous Japanese tape you've set aside for special use only? (or am I the only one who hides mine?) Then try your hand at a simple, washi tape birthday card like these ones I came up with during Packaging 101 with Miss Sally. If you have a few supplies and five minutes, then you have time to try your hand at this easy craft. Just think how thrilled you'll be with yourself when you reach for a lovely birthday card and actually find one :)

All you need are: blank cards, washi tape and a couple of toothpicks. Totally uncomplicated--no crafting skills required!

Good sources for Japanese tape include Pretty Tape / Kawaii Goodies / Studio Hijiri

{Thick + Creamy} Lemon Curd

• 06 July 2011

I know, I know...lemons aren't technically in season, but all these strawberries I'm surrounded by are encouraging thoughts of lemon-curd + berry-laden desserts. I just can't help going there...

So yesterday's creation was a thick, pudding-like lemon curd--it's just as delicious as my other lemon curd recipe, but different in texture. Because sometimes you want a silky, soft lemon curd and then other times you want something thick and custard-like. And now, my friends, you have both!

La Maisonnette Summer Update

• 05 July 2011

A few bits and pieces about La Maisonnette scheduling I wanted to make you aware of:

1. We have one remaining week open at La Maisonnette--August 26 through September 2. This is our only available week through mid-October, so if you're in the mood for a quiet vacation in the French countryside, this is your chance! Wouldn't it be lovely to take a stroll along the Dordogne river at dusk and snap your own dreamy image? I daresay, yes.

2. Christmas at La Maisonnette just opened up so if the summer doesn't work out, perhaps a simple, non-commercial Christmas in a quiet French village is up your alley? It would be so fun to cozy up to our new wood-burning stove while awaiting the arrival of St. Nicolas.

3. The La Maisonnette 2012 calendar will officially open up in the next two weeks so stay tuned...

Please contact my husband Ben, who manages our cottage, at the following email address if you're interested in any of these dates: lamaisonnettefrance@gmail.com. Merci beaucoup!

Tips on Traveling Overseas with Babies + Toddlers

Traveling abroad avec les enfants is not easy or cheap, and it requires a lot of effort, but it's so worth it! Sometimes we have to make great financial sacrifices to tote our families with us and let's be honest, vacationing with little ones is not a true vacation. However, making memories and creating poignant experiences is up there with life's best moments. Here are a few tips I've penned to help you plan your overseas journey and {hopefully} make it less painful :) I can't take away all the potential drama, but I can set you on the right path!

1. Call the airlines as soon as you book your flight and reserve the crib they attach to the bulkhead. There are only a couple of these attachable, little cribs available on each international flight so reserve them quickly. You'll want to bring your own blanket to cushion the crib for baby. Also, don't forget to change your seat assignments to be next to the crib.

2. Bring along your own diapers and wipes. This not only ensures that you and your baby have what you need when you need it, but it also conveniently creates an ever-increasing amount of space in your suitcase for all those trinkets you'll bring home.

3. Consider the airline when purchasing tickets. Your experience in-flight sets the tone for the rest of the trip and let's be honest...some are definitely better than others. We recently flew on Lufthansa and I highly recommend flying this carrier if you have children. To think, this was the most cost-effective option too! I appreciated their overall friendliness and attention to making the flight a pleasant experience for our family. My kids enjoyed fresh berries with custard, chicken with vegetables, and a nice crusty roll for their meals. They gave my kids fun activities to keep them busy and in general didn't act bothered by them, despite their antics.

4. Squeezable baby food is nice to have when traveling with babies (my favorite mentioned here). It's easy to squeeze the baby food directly into baby's mouth, which means no spoon is necessary. Squeezable baby food is also lighter than it's glass-jarred counterpart, making it ideal for traveling light...or at least light"er". Added bonus: squeezable baby food is organic and offered in interesting flavors.

I hope your family enjoys a great trip together this summer! If you have any tips you'd like to add, please chime in. This is a hot topic during the Summer and I think we all worry about traveling with our kids at some point.

Cute Party Ideas for your 4th of July Fête

• 01 July 2011

A few of my absolute favorite party ideas for the 4th from you-know-who...grosgrain and stripes? Candy flags? Yes, please. These are two darling Independence Day ideas I have at the top of my list. I think taking the time to make those little napkin rings/belts would be a bit more time consuming that I'd consider ideal, but they could also be used year after year (and even on other occasions too).

You can find all of the how-to's here...just start flipping through the slides.

Here's to a Happy Fourth of July! I wish a gorgeous, rain-free evening for us all :)
