Olive Juice Kids | $10 Outlet Sale

• 30 December 2011

I have a yearly tradition of posting about the semi-annual $10 outlet sale over at Olive Juice Kids...it's just too darn good to not mention.  This is the time when I purchase the bulk of my Olive Juice Kids goodies; the chance at gorgeous, quality French-inspired children's clothing for a dime is just what I'm looking for right after Christmas.  Hello sweet Peter Pan collars!

Important things to know about the sale:

1.  Per request, the nice folks over at Olive Juice Kids extended the $10 sale through Saturday night at midnight EST.  Items go quickly at these prices so pop in to the sale as soon as you can.  I noticed they even added a couple of new items tonight.

2. The coupon code you'll need to receive the $10 price is "MERRY".  Apply this when checking out and the promotion will pop up.

Enjoy shopping the outlet sale and I'll see you on Monday!

Meyer Lemon Bars

• 29 December 2011

{I have to squeeze in one more treat post this month before we all start making resolutions to avoid sugar :) }

Thanks to Costco, I've enjoyed a sizable stash of Meyer lemons this week--anywhere else they seem totally unaffordable ($3/lemon, what?).  It's such a treat to have so many of them hanging around as these are what my winter dreams are made of.  Meyers exude the loveliest fragrance and I'd gladly take that delicious smell wafting through my home any ol' day.

In the past couple of weeks, I've made three batches of Meyer Lemon Bars.  Yup, three!  I discovered the best lemon bar recipe on epicurious a couple years ago and love to make these in the middle of winter when all I want is something fresh.  If you use conventional lemons, these lemon bars are definitely going to be fantastic; but, when you make 'em with Meyers, they are out-of-this-world.

p.s. I recommend using a glass pyrex dish if you have one on hand.  For some reason mine always turn out better when I do.

La Fin de l'Année

Hello, hello! A belated Merry Christmas to you all!  How was your holiday?  Did you find that you were able to enjoy yourself and truly savor this special time of year?  I hope so...everyone deserves a nice Christmas.  We were fortunate enough to spend a very relaxed holiday with friends...friends who kindly allowed a very curious Baby Gray to eat the popcorn garlands from the bottom third of their Christmas tree all evening...all in the name of enjoying lots of adult conversation.  If that isn't true friendship, I don't know what is!

So it's December 29th and you're likely already thinking about what you want to experience, become and accomplish in 2012.  Isn't it wonderful that we have a fresh start ahead of us, a new chapter in our lives so to speak?  I am grateful for this new season of life and the chance I have to improve myself and develop better habits.  At the top of my list for 2012 is tackling my health, in all forms.  It's been on my mind for awhile and now that I'm 35, I feel a sense of urgency.  According to many health-related studies I've read, this is the age where everything starts to count.  Ay yay yay.

What about you?  What is on your mind?  Do you have a goal or two up your sleeve?

p.s. when I think of paper whites, I cannot help but associate them with January and New Year's Day.  How lucky we are that such a pretty flower can bloom in the most dreary of months, reminding us of beauty and hope.  Have a wonderful day my friends...see you tomorrow!

Christmas Report Card

• 22 December 2011

I realize Christmas Day isn't here just yet and that a report card is a tad premature; but, since the two days before Christmas is mostly full of baking, cooking, wrapping and delivering, I figure I can give myself a decent assessment on holiday preparations.  Some of you know my report card wasn't looking so hot last year; but that's okay because the fact that it was lackluster motivated me to make sure this one was memorable in all the right ways.

Here are some things I did right this year that made the month of December sweeter and less stressful:

1. If you hand write Christmas cards, buy them after Christmas at a discount and then save them for next year.  Even buy pretty stamps for the cards and store them together.  This not only ensures that you will in fact send cards the next year, but is cost-effective and a timesaver too.  One less thing to worry about next November...check.

2.  Buy holiday dresses and Christmas pajamas after Christmas (i.e. January) or in October, before Halloween.  This year I bought my girls these stylish and reasonably-priced dresses.  This is my first experience with Next and so far so good.   I found my kids pajamas on Ebay...a great place to find high-end children's clothing for reasonable prices if you're cool with closeouts.

3.  Tell yourself that all Christmas preparations need to be done by Halloween so that you actually get them done by Thanksgiving :)  This ensures a peaceful December and lots of time to bake cookies for the neighbors.

4.  If you don't have the opportunity to spend time with family on Christmas or Christmas Eve, then make plans with good friends in the same boat.

5.  Make an effort to share your means or talents with those less fortunate in some way...and do it on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.  Everyone desires a nice holiday so if you can help out in some way, even if small, then it counts big time!

What are some things you did this December (or earlier in the year) to make holiday preparations more enjoyable?  I still feel like I'm trying to get this down and would love to hear any input from you...

Evergreen Gift Toppers

• 21 December 2011

One of the best things about living in Seattle is all the green.  Green, green and more green.  I love the varieties of plants, bushes and trees all within a square city block.  It's an absolute visual treat!  I wanted to incorporate some of this local beauty into gift wrapping this year and snatched these {mostly} evergreen clusters up to play the role of gift toppers this year.  But seriously, even if you don't live in a place where evergreens abound, you can still put this idea to use...most succulents would make lovely gift toppers!  There is just something about the simple beauty of a plant that adds an air of cozy sophistication to a brown paper package tied up with string.

p.s. more simple gift wrapping ideas last week...in case you missed 'em.  Happy wrapping!

Introducing...a Cookbook!

• 20 December 2011

Today I wanted to update you on a recent project with Cafe Zupas and it involves a pretty, little cookbook. It's called the Cafe Zupas Blogger's Favorites Cookbook and it includes handpicked recipes from the past year all in one tidy place, including my recipe for French Gray Sea Salt Brownies and the yummiest Fleur de Sel Caramel Sauce.  The other women who contributed to the cookbook--Jen of Delightful Delicacies; Deb of Taste and Tell; Caroline of Armelle and Kelsey Nixon of the Cooking Channel--are all fabulous cooks and I'm really excited to be alongside such talent.  The cookbook is made for the home cook and contains doable recipes that don't require a degree from culinary school to master.  I think you'll enjoy it!

You can peek at the cookbook online and also at Zupas locations in Utah and Arizona.  Bon appetit!

Holiday Activities + other Fun Links

Lindsay introduced me to this beautiful new-to-me blog called Dear Friend.  I'm not sure why, but this picture above will not leave my mind.  I keep studying the tiny details and cannot get over how utterly gorgeous it is in the most candid way.  Also, I just learned from this blog that the famed Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream has an outpost in Nashville.  If you live in either place I hear it's a must-visit!

Marilyn is sharing a free holiday playlist that you can stream on your computer while you're working, playing or surfing.  Partake here - look at the sidebar.

*  Now is the time to watch all those fun holiday movies--some with kids and some without 'em.  I shared my picks last year and it was fun to peruse them again myself!  It's funny how you forget things here and there (or is it just me?!).

*  Last, if you're in the Seattle area and looking for a fun activity with your kids, take them to the Museum of Flight.  It's pretty darn amazing.  Plan to spend a few hours there to get your money's worth.  Your kids will love it!

Best Chocolate Macaron

• 18 December 2011

Last week I attended my friend's annual Favorite Things Party, which has become one of the highlights of December for me.  It's a great event that brings together women and allows us each to share one of our favorite holiday gifts with each other.  It's amazing what you can learn in just a short period of time!

This year I brought these giant, decadent, chocolate macarons from Marie et Frères here in Seattle.  The macarons are made by Mistral Kitchen, down the street from Marie's exotic chocolate shop, and conveniently sold alongside organic, free-trade super dark chocolate from South America.  Marie et Frères (formerly Claudio Corallo) is a fantastic gem here in Seattle and definitely worth popping into for a few moments if you are a true chocolate lover...or are looking for a gift for a chocolate lover!

p.s. if the passion fruit or coconut chocolate popsicles are in-house that day, you really must try one of those too :)

Minted Stationery GIVEAWAY

• 15 December 2011

Congratulations Michelle!  Please email me to secure your prize...Happy Holidays!

Some years things get so hectic that you just don't have the time or energy for Christmas cards...and that is precisely why sending New Year's cards is the perfect plan!  In fact, in France it's more of a tradition to send out New Year's cards than Christmas cards, so perhaps this is the year you adopt a French tradition, oui? (one of my favorites is this one that Jenna Lyons chose)

But even if you're not interested in New Year's cards, you'll surely be interested in handsome birth announcements, my favorite skinny address labels, or a stack of business cards.  There's a lot to love over at Minted and the feeling is mutual; this is why they are offering you a second giveaway this holiday season.  Go ahead and leave a comment to enter...full guidelines are listed below. Please leave your email address within your comment as well. Bonne chance!

Calming Interior: Gray, Maize and Creamy Whites

Before we moved to Seattle, we sold many of our things in anticipation of moving to a larger, more expensive city (many, many thanks to those of you who attended our tag sale btw!).  Upon arrival I assessed our living space, made some cosmetic changes and had to decide a simple color scheme.  Given the weather here I wanted to avoid gray at all costs, but looking at these images from this San Francisco residence makes me want to cover my living room in gray, yellow and creamy whites regardless of what the skies look like at the moment.  This space is incredibly calming, inviting and inspiring all in the same breath.

Mini Cherry Almond Crumb Cakes

• 13 December 2011

I used to make little goodies for my neighbors all the time before we moved to a new state; but I'm slowly getting to know the good people that live close to us here in Seattle and starting to feel comfortable leaving treats on their doorsteps.  It really does take about a year to feel settle one's family somewhere, doesn't it?  A few of you gave me that advice when we moved and it's absolutely true.

Since I love any excuse to make this delicious cherry almond crumb cake a la Sophistimom, I couldn't resist making mini versions once I spotted these little paper loaf pans at a local Japanese store.  Seriously, this cake is so good that I stock more canned and frozen cherries than any other pantry item...because I never...ever...want to not be able to make this cake when I'm feeling a hankering coming on.  Think edible mini gifts...one for the school secretary...one for the room mother...and one for the homeless guy down the road.

Wrapped: Simple Embellishments for Christmas Gifts

• 12 December 2011

This past week I spent a few hours wrapping Christmas presents and getting them ready to hit the post office.  Along the way, I snapped a few pictures for the purpose of sharing them with you...I hope something you see here sparks an idea or two on your end.  Since the goal was to keep things simple, I only used what I had on hand.  It was a lot of fun to rediscover a few craft supplies I'd completely forgotten about.  Love it when that happens!

Let's start off with some non-traditional Christmas colors:

{above}

1. Yuzen Cherry Blossom paper from Paper Source - it's on the pricey end of wrapping paper so using it on tiny jewelry boxes and the like will give you the most bang for your buck.

2.  Vintage coasters turned gift toppers - adds vibrant color, texture and is perfect on a gift that needs to slip into the mail easily.

3.  Lace Tape - this was such a fun supply to work with.  It's so unexpected and makes quite the statement.

{below}

4.  Mittens - Using a punch I've had for years, I created a few sets of mittens to string along the top of my sister's gift.

{above}

6.  Tiny angel cut-outs - add a little twine, some paper to serve as a backdrop and that little angel will be fit to be tied.

{below}

7.  Jingle Bell Jewelry Boxes - these are undoubtedly my favorite holiday craft supply.  You can do so many creative things with these tiny bells!  I love the way they look across a simple label.

8.  Felt Mistletoe - or at least my attempt at making it somewhat resemble mistletoe!  Inspired by this tutorial, this has fast become my favorite gift topper.  Added bonus: they are reusable.

{above}

9.  Polkadots - a fun way to use all those leftover pieces of paper.  Again, it slides into a padded mailer quite nicely.

10.  Pom pom garlands - always festive, always cheerful, and particularly fun during the holidays.  You can find them online here or at your local fabric store.

11.  Woven ribbon - particularly fun with a nice grosgrain or satin trim.

Enjoy and happy gift-giving!

Winter Wedding Ideas from France

• 11 December 2011

When I spotted these images in French wedding magazine, Oui (such a cute name for a wedding publication!), I immediately thought of how thrilled I would be if I were getting married during the winter.  To be perfectly honest, I would never have imagined a long cardigan would look so stylish over a ruffled wedding dress!  Sometimes it's so difficult to imagine a winter wedding dress ensemble that's as gorgeous as anything you'd see in the warmer months.  But these gorgeous depictions show how cozy, and how beautiful a bride--and her wedding--can be in the middle of January.  Stunning.

Love these Words

A beautiful set of words that popped into my mind last week...

"Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."

So often we think we understand what is going on in another persons life, but in reality we know very little, as not everyone wears their challenges/struggles/"battles", on their sleeves.  This quote serves as a sweet reminder to be softer, more understanding, less judgmental and forgiving.  Happy is the person who masters this, yes?

How to Create the Perfect Cheese Plate

• 08 December 2011

When we lived in Salt Lake we would often get together with another couple (who conveniently were our neighbors too) late in the evening for cheese tastings.  Typically we took turns choosing the cheeses for the night, which always kept things interesting and ecclectic.  We discovered, over the course of several evenings, what we loved and what we could pass on next time.  Aaah, what fun it was...

Last night, when finally sitting down to peruse a French magazine I brought back a couple of months ago, I spotted these gorgeous, handcrafted bread boards / cutting boards and was reminded of how much I love our one, nice, wooden cheese board.  It was a bit of an investment for us, but every time we use it, we are so grateful to have it; and we likely will never have to replace it in our lifetime.  Anyway, did you know that cheese plates make the easiest-to-assemble holiday appetizer ever?  I know many of you are looking for something sophisticated to bring to your next holiday fête, so why not create a beautiful cheese plate?

Here's what you need to do:

1. procure wooden board - try popping into your local Anthropologie (or perhaps call first) to pick up one of these gorgeous Trudeau baguette boards (they are sold out online :(). A long, skinny cheese plate would be so fun.  Or, try Jayson Home for vintage French cutting boards.  You can use a wooden cutting board as a cheese board...I often do!  And last, try a few places on Etsy...this one looks nice.

2. choose your cheese - it can be very overwhelming to stare at 50 different artisan cheeses and figure out those that are outstanding and worth the price tag!  I wrote a post last year for Zupas highlighting my favorite artisan cheeses, so take a peek if you'd like some inspiration for assembling your own cheese plate

If you'd like to share your favorite cheese (and I hope you do!), please leave a comment on this post (vs. the Zupas post).  Merci! I am always on the lookout for a new, delicious cheese to add to our list of favorites.

update: Some of Aran's "students" at the workshop in France created some beautiful cheese plates with simple ingredients--you can view them over at Jennifer's blog. I feel hunger pains coming on!

Neighbor Gift Ideas

• 07 December 2011

The Christmas season presents us with a great excuse to reach out to our neighbors and perhaps say "hello" to a person/s we haven't taken the time to get to know just yet.  For others, the month of December is just one giant excuse to bake for those we already hold dear.  I personally think it's fun to do both!  It doesn't matter if you live in an apartment or a home...go knock on their door and present them with a little something you've made...'tis the season!

Here are five neighbor gift ideas I've been mulling over myself.  Please chime in if you have a suggestion as well.  Merci!

1. homemade candy wrapped up in pretty paper - use a food safe paper like white or kraft brown parchment paper.  Last year I used the checked paper pictured above, and while very cute, it stuck to the candy.

2. homemade granola (here is my granola recipe and here is Bon Appetit's recipe just to get you started) - bag it in a clear, cellophane bag and then slip into a kraft brown box.  Add a label and you're good to go!

3. homemade jam you made last summer and then froze - make a fresh batch of homemade rolls to accompany the jam for extra points.

4. a sweet, little plant placed inside a burlap sac - choose rosemary,  any type of succulent, amaryllis or paper whites.  Add a pretty ribbon to cinch the bag for a polished look.

5. a little jar of lemon curd - lemons are in season right now and you can even find Meyer Lemons at Costco, so it would be a shame to pass up a chance to make this versatile citrus-y spread.  It wouldn't hurt to type out a tiny list of ways to use lemon curd for your recipients...not everyone is familiar with the stuff, but I can almost guarantee that every one of 'em will love it.  Here are two ways to make lemon curd.

Real Life Home No.12 - Dottie Angel's Mossy Shed

• 05 December 2011

I adore this week's "real life home", thoughtfully created and curated by Tif Fussell, author of the "granny chic" blog, Dottie Angel.  There is so much inspiration here, I feel like I could create a week's worth of posts on just her home alone (hence the bajillion photos in this post).  Tif has done an amazing job of beautifying "Mossy Shed" (her pet name for the property) on a budget and I am so impressed by the amount of effort, resourcefulness and elbow-grease she put forth.  What can I say, I'm in awe!

Let's start out with the ridiculously cute airstream in her backyard, lovingly referred to as "Gladys".  Tif and her sons fixed it up this past summer and plan on getting lots of use out of it next Summer once it's warm again.  One side for her and once side for them.  The side you see below is "hers".

For those of you just tuning in, this series showcases living spaces decorated by people who are not formally-trained interior designers; people who mix new finds with antiques and secondhand pieces from Craigslist (or the like). People who have figured out, on their own, what looks and feels good in their living space, be it a free-standing home, an apartment, or in one particular case, a tower :)

Tif enjoys frequent visits to local thrift stores and antique stores...the antique church pew shown above is her most recent find.  I had to chuckle when I saw this as La Maisonnette also has a table with 3 chairs on one side and an antique church pew on the other.  Has anyone else tried this combination? :)

Hello Dottie!  What a fabulous set up right next to the front door.  That mid-century piece is a keeper and I love how the art on the wall hangs so low.

Tif's design philosophy goes something like this..."I believe if you only bring things into your home that you like, or have a meaning to you and your family, chances are they will all go together.  It might mean a bit of a shuffle around to accomodate your newly found friend, but those are the things I  like doing best.  I am attracted to furnishings and knick knacks with a history to them; I do like a certain amount of kitsch, but I like to mix it in with mid-century and vintage.  It is all balanced out with plenty of white and space for things to breath, giving clean lines to all the vintage, and this in turn is what folks like to call Granny Chic."

This looks like the most delightful breakfast nook.  A beautiful, happy place to begin the day.

Tif has it down when it comes to displaying collections.  It takes great skill to compose a wall of "bits and bobbles" like this.  My kids would go crazy playing "I Spy" in this colorful corner of Mossy Shed.

The industrial looking orange lamp is one of my favorite accessories.  Did you know she found it on etsy?  Have you ever purchased vintage furniture or accessories on etsy?  If so, was it a good experience?  Tif says she enjoys browsing the aisles of vintage from the comfort of her own couch.

I love how she added her feminine touch to this fabulous, but otherwise masculine-looking, mid-century sofa.

Pretty touches of blue here and there.  I'm now a believer when it comes to painting the backs of bookcases.  Look at what a difference it makes here!  And that Orla Kiely wallpaper...do you remember it from "real life home no.1"?  The delicious pattern certainly makes the prettiest anchor in a room.

Feeling a sudden wave of office envy coming over me...

Tif found the industrial desk on Craigslist, painted it glossy white, and voila!

A brilliant way of covering up a fireplace during the "off" months.

As soon as she could, Tif changed out the standard lighting with more dynamic fixture.  It never ceases to amaze me how one light fixture really changes the feel of a space.

Click below on "Read More" to see more inspiring images from Tif Fussell's "granny chic" space.  I'd love to know what details stand out and inspire you too!
