House/Garage Tour

• 29 April 2010

I love a little reminder that small spaces can pack a lot of punch and that square footage is highly overrated! You've got to check out this garage-turned-home conversion from the New York Times this week. Very inspiring. Text here, slideshow here.

Menu of the Week: Easy, Peasy

Since our family has officially consumed its frozen-pizza quota for the year in just 3 months, I'm forcing myself to start cooking again. I am finding that even the simplest of meals take a lot of time right now (I am so rusty!), but I am trying not to be too frustrated with this reality. Honestly, I am just grateful to be able to eat food again, even if it takes me 2 hours to make something that normally only takes 45 minutes to prepare! I am reminded what a commitment it is to make homemade food.

Therefore, this week's theme was "easy" and "tried-and-true", meaning no new recipes...just old favorites that I'm familiar with. Baby steps...

Couscous + Parsley Crusted Mahi-Mahi with Arugula Salad + Lemon Vinaigrette (sans prosciutto this time)

Vegetable Stir Fry with Rice (loving our new rice cooker) - thrown together with whatever veggies we have

Cheddar Corn Chowder (a great way to use up that huge mama bag of organic corn from Costco and perfect for that one rainy day this week)

Rigatoni with Sausage + Zucchini

Also, I'm including a freezer meal for those last-minute emergencies. I like to make Big Batch Vegetable Soup, but add some ground beef too (this will be my first time making it with grass-fed beef--curious to see if there is improvement in taste). Then, I divide it up into separate freezer Ziploc bags and stock away for future use!

Nursery Perfection

• 28 April 2010

Last year I hosted a cooking class for a lovely group of women--two of them sisters and 3 of them their friends. They were the most delightful gals ! At the end of the evening, I felt very much inspired by them in many aspects and was so happy to have made their acquaintance!

One of the attendees, Caitlin Wilson, is now living in Dubai with her sweet little family, and has a lovely blog to boot. She is putting to use her interior design background and sprinkling style upon everything she touches...including this gorgeous nursery. It.is.perfection.

You can view many more images in this post, and also catch a glimpse of all the other inspiring things Caitlin is working on here. Her blog is fast becoming one of my favorites!

It's a...

You know...I wish I could tell you! But this time we decided not to find out the sex of the baby ahead of time. We've never done this before, but since it is our last, I thought it would be fun to head for the hospital come September with all the excitement in the world awaiting us. I can't wait for my husband to call out, "it's a __!". Admittedly, it took a lot of self-control to not find out, but I know it's going to be worth it this time around...even if I have to buy a few yellow onesies to tide us over :)

p.s. Everything looks good despite the health issues of the first 16 weeks. Pfew!

p.p.s. It appears there is a possibility I am a little further along than I thought--yessssss :)

Une Kitchenette en Plein Air

• 27 April 2010

I love the idea of a makeshift kitchen outdoors (especially when cooking things like fish!). For some reason it strikes me as the perfect setup for a beach house. Casual. Simple. and lots of fun. Especially if had little polkadot pans :)

All About Pancakes

Last Sunday I spent the morning outside, under the picnic table, enjoying a delicious pancake picnic with my 3 kiddos. So delicious in fact that the 4 of us (1 adult, 3 kids mind you) went through all 24 pancakes! We enjoyed two of my all-time favorite pancake recipes and I also discovered a new time-saving tip. To read more about them both, head to the Zupas blog.

On the Market: NWT Pillows from Auto

• 26 April 2010

A few months ago I purchased some stylish pillows for a client from the fabulous website, Auto (r.i.p). Sadly, the red was not the right shade for the space and when I went to return them, I was denied the opportunity as Auto was closing both its doors--both online and at its retail space in NY--that very week. Total bummer for a couple of reasons. Anyway, the pillows are gorgeous, of an excellent shape, and brand new with tags. If you're in the market for a splash of color for that neutral-colored sofa of yours, these might be a fun twist! They retailed for $62 + tax + shipping, but I'd be happy to let them go to one of you blog readers for $40 each.

If you're interested, drop me an email at: stephmodo@gmail.com. Thanks!

Organizing Tip #26

In an easily accessible container (even a Ziploc bag would do or a more eco-friendly choice, a cloth sack), place a stash of cards--I like a combination of handmade + letterpress cards. Add a nice pen, your address book and pretty stamps and you have everything you need to write a quick note in under 5 minutes. Instead of searching all over the house for all 4 items, you'll have them in the same place! This will not only make life easier for you, but it will ensure the likelihood of those notes actually making it out to the mailbox...and that's always a good thing :)

Above are some simple notes I made this week from papers I already had. Initially I thought I didn't have anything that would work, but after some searching around, I happily found a color combination I liked. I'm guessing many of you have some fun supplies roaming about that would be perfect for such a project!

If you need ideas for letterpress cards, make sure you peek at these affordable options.

Also, if you'd like to view the other 25 organizing tips, start here.

p.s. you can find good, but inexpensive pens in the Martha Stewart collection for Michaels Arts & Crafts.

My New Favorite Coffee Table Book

• 23 April 2010

I picked this beauty up on the Anthropologie sale rack this week--happy to have found the very last copy. It was love at first sight! It's not only pretty on the outside, but it's quite captivating on the inside too. Gorgeous details, interesting text and all around a fantastic kind of thing for one's coffee table :)

Anthro
is sold out of Coco on it's website, but Phaidon carries it here and Amazon here...on sale!

I also noticed Anthro is now carrying Coralie Bickford-Smith's gorgeous collection of Penguin classics. Swoon!!

p.s. D*S featured an interesting interview with Coralie--if you're interested in reading it, click here.

More Recipes to Love

• 22 April 2010

This month I decided it was high time I update the "Recipes to Love" section located in my sidebar. With the warm weather approaching, I couldn't help but add more favorites that are particularly wonderful in Spring and Summer. Enjoy!

Colorful Stoves

Spotting this image made me rethink the idea that my dream kitchen is full of clean, modern stainless steel appliances. How fun would a yellow stove be? or perhaps one in robin's egg blue? Word is that a company called Elmira Stove Works will paint any stove you order in a custom shade of your choice. Aaah...I'd choose a luscious color from Farrow & Ball, how about you?

A Moment Away

• 21 April 2010

Today I am taking a little break in order to clear my head, play catch up on a few things and to take my own advice :) Funny how we have to do that sometimes, no?

Friends, have a lovely, lovely day and I will see you back here tomorrow!

Clever Birthday Party Invitation

• 20 April 2010

My husband created this invitation for me when the big "30" arrived. He even made it a surprise party, which was even better! It was one of the nicest things he's ever done for me--the attention to detail that night was out-of-this-world thoughtful.

Since we all know that a great party often begins with a great invitation, I thought I'd present this a potential idea for some of your own birthday parties. While it definitely makes a statement for those more momentous birthdays (16, 18, 21, 30, 40, 50, etc.), it could easily fly for any year really. It's a fun way to express your creativity and to set a tone or theme, if you have a specific idea in mind. Using this idea as inspiration, think of all the possibilities just waiting to be created! By the way, I really like the way he included a picture of me the day I was born amidst all the "30" images. You don't notice it right away, but it adds a personal element that every recipient will appreciate.

Grey Sea Salt Brownie Sundaes with Caramel Vanilla Sauce

After discovering a new, delicious brownie recipe this month, I decided I had to make it again--this time with some coarse grey sea salt from Guerande sprinkled on top. What a great combo of salty and sweet! But the experimentation didn't stop there (perhaps due to the fact that I couldn't keep down anything with sugar for 3+ months?). A good brownie definitely deserves to be part of a sundae, right? Why, yes it does! I topped the salted brownie with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream and some homemade caramel vanilla sauce and that's what I call happiness at 9 o'clock at night. Can't wait to make it again...

You can find the recipes here :)

Affordable Letterpress Cards

• 19 April 2010

I like to keep a handy stash of notes and stamps in a metal box in my kitchen, as it seems I am always in my kitchen when reminded of a note I need to write someone. In that stash I have a collection of handmade notes, letterpress notes for very special occasions and pretty stamps (current favorite here). That being said, I can't spend a fortune on letterpress, so I am always on the lookout for "affordable letterpress"...you know...the kind that isn't $6-8 per card. As I combed through Etsy's pages, I was thrilled to find so many I loved! I hope you enjoy them too :)

Shea Butter + Stretch Marks

• 16 April 2010

When pregnant with my first child, my husband and I wandered into a L'Occitane (pronounced "lox-ee-tahn") store in San Francisco. Noticing my obvious condition, the salesperson told me how their 100% shea butter kept her stretch-mark free during her pregnancy. I was a total sucker and believed her...we bought a $40 tin right then and there. Since stretch marks run in my family (I believe the general consensus is they are genetic?), I was desperate to give anything a try. And she was so convincing...

Well, surprisingly she was absolutely right! I've used it with each of my 3 pregnancies and can now vouch for it's effectiveness (and am hoping the track record continues...). At one point during my second pregnancy I noticed stretch marks forming in an area where shea butter hadn't been applied. I freaked out and started covering it with the shea butter and after a short period of time the marks faded away completely. At this point I was thinking this greasy goodness was pretty much da-bomb.

Added bonus: having my husband apply the shea butter not only cured me, but it cured his eczema on his hands as well. Apparently shea butter is useful for all sorts of hard-to-treat skin maladies and conditions including minor burns (you can read more about it's uses here and here). Also, if you experience extremely dry hands during the winter, try applying shea butter to your hands and then cover them with thin, white cotton gloves while you sleep.

A few additional notes:

1. I realize there is a possibility this won't work for everyone. After all, our bodies and our skin are all different (not to mention all the other factors). BUT, if it helps only one person, the post will have been worthwhile to write :)

2. L'Occitane does sell a balm that is supposedly made for stretch marks, but it doesn't work sadly. Although it does contain shea butter, it isn't enough to keep the stretch marks away. Going 100% with the shea butter is apparently the only way to go.

3. Today the L'Occitane website shows it is currently sold out of this product, so I'm linking to Amazon instead (however, I'm sure their stores keep it in stock regularly). Sephora also carries it online here.

4. I average about 2.5 tins per pregnancy and begin using it as soon as my belly starts growing (around 4 months for me).

What to Pack for Paris (Part Deux)

I was cruising through Prêt à Voyager looking for something in her archives, when I stumbled across this post. Anne (who is also one of the talented editors over at Design*Sponge) wrote the most brilliant and concise post I've seen on the subject of what to pack for Paris. Since I seem to always (and I mean always) pack the wrong items of clothing to wear on any trip, it's particularly helpful to me. Nichole's contribution was also much-appreciated...three black long-sleeved tees....check...two pairs of dark jeans...check...you get the idea.

My original post (part 1) shares a little background info as well as a list of street fashion blogs showcasing local Parisians and what they are donning right now--as in today. You may find it helpful if you're thinking about heading to Paris this year!

Bicycle Baskets

• 14 April 2010

I dream of owning a cute bike with a basket (or two) so I can ride all over the neighborhood delivering treats. Right now I can't imagine anything more liberating. Perhaps next year when I am done being pregnant and am facing a 35th birthday. Yikes.

Double Wicker Saddle Baskets

Canvas + Leather Saddle Bags/Panniers

Wicker Front Basket with Leather Straps (great buy!)

I am also in love with this bicycle too. My kids would LOVE the chance to tag along. Plus, I could fit more treats inside that big ol' bucket of a trailer :)

Hanging Planters

I love these. They appear to be easy-to-install (I am a huge fan of instant results), easy-to-maintain, and out-of-reach for my smaller children. My deck could use a little touch up and these budget-friendly options might be the perfect solution. Thinking back to our many years of apartment-living, I'd bet these would work hanging out of windows as well (if your landlord is okay with it and it's not against fire code!).

p.s. loving the idea of filling them with succulents too. Three cheers for a plant type that's tough to kill!

Easy Homemade Pizza

• 13 April 2010

I am sharing the recipe our family uses for easy homemade pizza over at Zupas today. It takes about 5-10 minutes to prepare and beats any Boboli crust by a long shot. Oh, and most importantly it is really, really good!

Decorating a Boy's Room

• 12 April 2010

For whatever reason, I find it particularly difficult to design a boy's bedroom. Do any of you feel the same way? That being said, if I ever happen upon a clipping of a boy's bedroom that I like (rare), I quickly throw it into my files for inspiration. Sometimes one just needs a place to start!

Here are some of my all-time favorites for "little boys" and "big boys" alike:

Serena and Lily is an excellent source for inspiration when it comes to boy bedrooms. Strangely, I usually don't love their girly rooms, but they rarely miss a beat when it comes to the little guys. Both of these are perfect for the 10+ age group.

Totally swooning over this recent feature over at Design*Sponge. What a brilliant idea to create a play area on the lower bunk! I know my son would love a "secret" place to play and I'd love the option to cover up the mess with the slide of a curtain:)

(photos reposted with permission by home owner and photographer)

A stupendous design for your "explorer". Highlights: the shade, the mobile, and the well-placed colorful accents.

Perfect for the Pez-lovin' boy...whether young or tween. I like the versatility of this room as it could easily transition from 4-year-old to 12-year-old with a few touches. Surprised at how much I like the combination of chocolate brown and red.

Felt Pom Pom Mobiles

My love for mobiles began with Calder. Seeing one of his large, bright, tomato red creations floating in space inside the National Gallery of Art pretty much solidified the infatuation.

These adorable felt pom pom mobiles have me thinking...nursery? my little girl's room? the playroom? They are simply delightful.

A Few Openings at La Maisonnette

• 08 April 2010

We have a couple of weeks that just opened up at the cottage this Summer...so if you've always wanted to visit Southern France, this would be a great region to hit. You really catch a glimpse of the true, authentic France down in the Dordogne. So leave the kiddos with their grandparents and take your true love on a romantic vacation to the French countryside!

The first couple to rent our cottage (one of the most adorable duos I've ever met by the way), took a hot air balloon ride over the valley, the castles, the fields, everything. Now they have us dreaming of such an experience after viewing their fantastic video (note: there is sound).

Affordable Hotels in Paris

Oh my. Look at these lovely images from all these hotels...I'd take any one of 'em and feel like I'd died and gone to heaven...

If you've ever researched hotel rooms in Paris, you've probably been shocked at the prices. I know I have--they're like NY prices, but worse. And then you add in the exchange rate...but, there is good news! Charming, lovely, "affordable" hotels in the heart of Paris do exist (all of the images above depict such hotels). In fact, it appears there are several choices! Each of these beautiful hotels are priced between $100 and 200 per night USD. Here they are in no particular order:

1. Hotel des Grandes Ecoles - classic French - lots of charm (or so it seems from the website)

2. Hotel du Danube - what a great neighborhood to be in and the hotel looks amazing.

3. Familia Hotel - in the lively Latin Quarter

4. Also, a new-to-me chain of boutique hotels in Paris called Tablet seems like a fabulous resource. I'd love to try one of their hotels sometime. What a killer combination..."affordable" and "boutique". Awesome! Cool website too (it's modern, navigable, and organized unlike many French sites).

5. Chambres d'hotes in Paris are the ultimate in affordability. Typically home/apartment owners, rent out one room in their own residence to travelers. In the morning they typically offer you a simple French breakfast of yogurt, juice/coffee/hot chocolate, bread and jam. We've had some fun experiences staying at chambres d'hotes outside Paris and in the countryside elsewhere. It's a great deal.

7. Priceline - Okay so you won't find a charming (in the Parisian sort of way), affordable hotel here, but you will find an affordable, room in a "luxury hotel" for under $200 USD/night.

(update! I have to add Hotel du Petit Moulin--a popular boutique hotel that's affordable!)

Forgive me...I couldn't help but include a few gorgeous hotels that one wouldn't necessarily put in the "budget" category; but they aren't up there with the Four Seasons either ($1,300/night in Paris!). These two lovely hotels are in the 300€ range, which is about $425/night. Definitely a splurge in my book, but fun to drool over anyway. Someday...

* Hotel Particulier

* Hotel de l'Abbaye

A Thoughtful Way to Recycle Letterpress Cards

• 07 April 2010

Scenario: A thoughtful friend or acquaintance takes the time to send you a letterpress card (or small desk calendar). You relish in opening the weighty card and run your fingers along the paper, admiring the texture (don't tell me I'm the only one who does this!). You read the handwritten note and come to a full appreciation for the person who gave you such a lovely card. Now what exactly do you do with such a lovely piece of paper?

Well, in the past I've pinned every letterpress card I've received on my inspiration board. I enjoy admiring it for several months, or maybe even a year or two! It's a pleasure to see them every day and to think of the person who gave them to me. I've seen others place them in a decorative bowl, or clip them to suspended wire. I'm sure there are lots of great ideas for display, but there does come a time--whether it's 2 months or 2 years--when one needs to creatively refresh, be it a bowl or a board. For some time now I've felt the need to create some kind of system that involved recycling, but in a thoughtful, respectful, way.

First, using a small paper cutter, I trimmed the front of the card off, separating the graphic portion from the handwritten portion. I placed the pretty "covers" in one pile and the notes in another. Using a hole-puncher, I put a hole in the top left corner of each note and then ran a small satin ribbon through each hole, binding the cards together (one of those loose metal book rings would work nicely too, although you'd sacrifice a little visual appeal). Also, I couldn't resist adding one of the hearts from our Valentine's Day garland to the top of the pile--it seemed an appropriate "label".

Now, when I need to add a card to the bunch, it's easy to do--just punch another hole and re-tie the ribbon. Voila!

Now on to the pretty little pile of card "covers"...

Using the three large punches I own, I created little cut-outs of each. It was fun figuring out how to maximize each card and what shape would look best.

Note: if you don't own any large punches, but live near a scrapbooking store, look into using their dye-cut machines. Usually it only costs a couple dollars per hour if you bring your own paper goods. They would have most of these shapes as well as a bajillion other choices.

Next, I punched a little hole at the top of each cut-out and slid a piece of ribbon through, tying a knot at the base (works best for weightier ribbon, like grosgrain). For other tags I took the piece of ribbon, folded it in half, and then slid it through the hole, from the back. Then I took the two ribbon pieces hanging out back and placed both of them, together through the front loop. It's a dressier look and works best for thin ribbon.

Now I have an ecclectic bunch of beautiful letterpress gift tags to use and a lovely stack of thoughtfully-written cards to save forever!

Dark Chocolate Pudding

• 06 April 2010

After purchasing a mother lode of Guittard bittersweet chocolate chips from this gal, I became increasingly fixated with bittersweet chocolate desserts. Bittersweet chocolate is simply the best kind of chocolate out there when it comes to taste (and according to most, the "healthiest"!); its deep, rich color is also tantalizing.

Today, over at Zupas, I am sharing my easy recipe for Dark Chocolate Pudding. Basically I took a very American dessert and then added a hint of sophistication. It tastes more like something you'd find in France where the emphasis is on enhancing flavor (in this case--chocolate), instead of straight sugar. And seriously, it'll take you only 10 minutes to make.

If that's your kind of dessert, then click here for the recipe!

Artiga Linens

• 05 April 2010

One of these days (or rather "years"), I'd love to discover the Basque country of France, just a few hours further southwest of La Maisonnette. I think I'd love the food, the seaside, and of course these gorgeous, cheerful linens. This blast of color is just what I need this Spring day as I gaze outside at the s-n-o-w. Good thing it's Spring Break, no?

p.s. I bought the apron, 3rd from left a few years ago at Pelote and love it. They have some nice masculine aprons there as well if you're looking for a "his" and "hers" kind of set.

Seating for Sale

Update: Thank you all for the interest! It's very appreciated...I'll continue to post items as I begin my "spring cleaning"! All 3 of these chairs sold to the first local to email me...what luck! More coming...

I have several chairs in storage that are currently not being put to use. I'm hoping you can offer them a home in your own living space/office! They are all in great shape and I am offering them up for great deals. Here are some descriptions of each, starting from the left. Please email me at "stephmodo@gmail.com" if you are located in Utah and interested in procuring one or more of them. Thanks!

1. Williams Sonoma chair: Purchased at a local designer's warehouse sale. $20. I'll throw in the custom-made pillow for $10 if you'd like.

2. Spin Barstool: Aluminum stool used for a short period of time. Once I found Tolix stools to match my kitchen chairs, I had to give this one up. What an I say? All this Tolix business is turning into a real addiction. $25. (read more about this great stool here)

3. Modern chair (not a creative description, I know): I love this chair...I have one in my bedroom at my desk and love it. But, guess what? I have an extra one that isn't being used. Want it? $40.

In Your Makeup Bag

• 01 April 2010

Although in my 30's, I still don't really know the ins and outs of makeup application; this is reaffirmed every time I go and see my sister Cher, who kindly offers helpful tips as she leads me through the aisles of Sephora. We have a standing joke that the only time I purchase makeup is with her.

So tell me, what are your favorites? What can't you live without? I am feeling the need to mix things up a bit, even if it's only for a new mascara and I'd love to hear your input on anything makeup-related...
