Tulie Bakery

After saying a tearful goodbye to my favorite local chocolaterie, Xocolat, I was ecstatic to discover a new bakery filled its old space. In case you haven't noticed, I do love a good bakery :) Tulie Bakery is a delightful place to linger thanks to the delicious food, natural light, and well-designed dining space. When I walked in and saw the same French bistro chairs & stools I have in my own home, I instantly felt a connection.

What is lovely about Tulie is that it fills a void here in Salt Lake. There really isn't another bakery that offers so many delicious-tasting and well-presented cakes, all made from scratch. You'll find decadent cakes full of chocolate ganache ("bette noir") as well as fruitier flavors like orange poppyseed. Given that idea behind Tulie Bakery began after owner Leslie Seggar couldn't find a good quality birthday cake for her son, it's only fitting to offer a grand selection of amazing cakes.

A few other things I also love are the Bran Muffins (I love bran muffins though...), any of her Quiches, the Coconut Cream Tart, and the Banana Cream tart. A funny thing about those tarts...so I sat down with Leslie for a few minutes during one of my recent visits. I mentioned to her that her tarts reminded me of my favorite bakery in San Francisco, Tartine. A glowing smile slowly emerged across her face and then she told me how she spent a short stint at Tartine learning their craft. She pretty much had me then and there. If I can have my own piece of Tartine Bakery here in Salt Lake, I am one happy girl.

Kitchen Sink Spruce Up No.2

I love discovering easy ways to improve some aspect of my living space...you know, little makeovers that only take minutes to complete but have a huge effect on your surroundings. Of all the easy makeover tips I've read over the years, this one has to be my favorite.

Because kitchens are often the gathering spots in most households, you'll enjoy the benefits of this spruce up every single day (like I do!). If you're concerned about achieving a sweet new "look for less", this is the one to tackle. And you don't need to consider yourself a "DIY'er" to handle this one.

Step 1. Remove everything from your kitchen counters that isn't used 2-3 times per week. For me that meant storing my blender in my cupboard and relocating the toaster. This one feels so good to do...talk about instant gratification!

Step 2. Find two simple glass bottles, whether they be vintage or new, and fill one with dish soap and one with liquid hand soap. I like Dawn with Bleach because of its pretty neutral color. Bright blue soap doesn't match everyone's color scheme :) My sister-in-law discovered that adding a little water to the soap makes it flow easier.

Step 3. Pick up a hardy plant (less work for you!) and a pot you'll enjoy seeing everyday. Terracotta pots, like the one pictured here, are not only inexpensive but colorful too.

Step 4. Add a natural sponge and soap dish to hold the sponge.

Voila! You have an entirely new look in your kitchen! What I love about this project (besides how easy it is) is that anyone can create a new look despite the design of their kitchen. It doesn't matter if your kitchen is new or old; or whether you have Formica or Carrara marble. You can still acquire a pretty look with just a few additions and a few relocations :) It's amazing how a simple plant, set of bottles, and big, squishy sponge can dress up an often-utilitarian space so nicely. I love it.

Sources:

Sponge: Nordstrom Rack; however, you can find something similar at other bath supply stores or even art supply stores.

Dish: TJMaxx/Homegoods

Glass Bottles: Cost Plus World Market; not near one? Check out this post for more online options.

Yummy Basic

When in doubt, go "basic", but go "homemade" too. This easy recipe featured in Martha's recent "Our Best Cupcake" spread is the perfect thing to make if you need to worry about pleasing a crowd.

P.S. The suggested frosting recipe is nice too, if you are seeking a stiffer buttercream.

Organizing Tip #23

Using a hanging canvas organizer, organize your child's outfits for the week...one outfit per slot.

Doing this alleviates a lot of conflict in our home--the kind that begins with, "but I don't want to wear that today". Instead, I sort my children's outfits in a canvas sweater organizer (trying to include that favorite spider shirt each week!). Depending on the age of the child I may include underwear & socks. I then choose different outfits to meet their different needs (park outfits, school outfits, church outfits, etc.) and place them in a slot. In the morning when it's time to get ready, the child goes to their organizer and choose one of the pre-approved outfits.

It's a win-win system for a couple of reasons:

1. The child feels like they are choosing their outfit, not their Mom; feeling independent is important to these little people you know, especially when it comes to what they wear :)

2. Mom doesn't have to worry they'll choose something inappropriate to wear and arguing over ensembles becomes virtually obsolete.

3. Depending on their mood that day, the child will have enough choices to find something that works for him/her.

I realize there may come a time when this doesn't work anymore. But, if your kids are between the ages of 2 and 10, I think this plan is feasible.

Lemon Cake

A popular question around here is, "what do I make with lemon curd? how do I use it up?". Well, I'm here to share with you yet another delicious use for curd...piled on top of this Lemon Cake. Yu-uh-mmy. Add some homemade whipped cream and berries and you're good to go. Don't forget to be generous with the curd! Somehow guests can never get enough...husbands too. What I love about this dessert is that it's a fruit-based dessert you can enjoy in the wintertime...since the height of citrus season is right about now.

If you want to learn more about lemon curd, feel free to read this post. Contrary to what you might think initially, it's easy to make. Promise :)

Off-White Pencil Skirt

Something like this would be perfect with all the black tops that I've accrued over the years...I'm guessing I'm not the only one in this boat :) It looks like the belt is included, which is one less accessory to have to worry about! Plus, it's removable so you could potentially wear it with other outfits.

DWR Lovin'

Right now the piece I'm saving for is a coffee table...it doesn't have to be new...just something I love. For now my Craigslist $30 table will do, but I can't help enjoying this beautiful piece from the most recent DWR catalog.

In case you were unaware, DWR is hosting a sale in a few weeks (see that big red circle in the upper right corner?!). I'm not sure I've seen a sale this good from DWR in a long while. The way I see it, it's better to have a room full of second-hand but good-looking furniture + one fabulous iconic piece, than to have a room full of all mediocre, chain-store furniture. Plus, it's more fun to use and love on a daily basis.

I'm still over at Design Mom today...feel free to pop in :)

And, in case you didn't see the Sixx Design interview last week on Design Mom, you must catch up on it here. It's incredibly inspiring to know there are families, large families even, out there doing interesting things with their lives. Love it.

Here is one of my favorite tidbits from the interview:

8) What are your strategies for keeping a home both child and adult friendly?

Reducing clutter is the key to an adult and child friendly house. Be organized and ask yourself if certain things are essential. Keep valuables and art out of reach of the children. Relax, it’s just stuff. Home making should be fun. A well designed and functional house should be just that. Next time your child breaks something, remind yourself that “it’s just stuff.”

Amen!

Check out this 100 meter photograph taken in Berlin...the photo consists of 178 different people on the same railroad bridge but on different days. 20 in fact. It's not only interesting on an artistic level, but on a cultural one as well...at least for me...I've never visited Berlin.

Kumquat Addition

The Meyer is looking lonely...and overworked...so we are going to {hopefully} doctor it up out-of-sight until it is lovely and in good health again. Until then, this kumquat tree is going to keep me company everyday. There is something invigorating about a citrus plant in a kitchen...

New in the Shop: Birthday Candles

Remember those tall, skinny and very, very pretty candles that Martha used to sell online a long time ago? I've always missed them...and perhaps a few of you have as well. I found something fairly similar (and super cute!) I want to share with you in my shop.

I'm offering candles in both white and yellow. I'm thinking both should cover just about every color scheme!

Meyer Lemons at Costco

Yes, it's true. Did Costco just became a little cooler or what? You should've seen my face when I saw these delicious smelling yellow beauties next to the conventional lemons at my local Costco (downtown SLC). My, oh my. I bought two containers and am now wishing I'd bought a third...perhaps tomorrow I'll make another trip! The best part? The containers are $7 and contain 15 lemons! This is an incredible bargain. So if you love Meyers like I do...get thee hence to Costco!

Note: if you ever wondered what a Meyer lemon was, see the label on the side of the above package :)

Bread Machine Rolls

I've been using this recipe for years...well, since my mother-in-law gave me her old (but still working!) bread machine. I can't tell you how nice it is to have an easy and delicious recipe like this on hand. I'm sure I'm not the only one who loves homemade rolls, but not the often time-consuming process of making them. I typically under bake them a little to keep them soft and not too brown on their bottom sides :)

In the wintertime it's nice to make a good soup and serve it with these rolls. A nice minestrone would be perfect. In fact, while we are on the subject of minestrone soup, does anyone have a great recipe you'd care to share?

Hotel Crib

Remember that simple, stylish hotel crib Jordan posted about here? Well, I am selling a brand new white, metal version that looks just like the one Moses sleeps in :) The hotel crib is even portable (as in, it folds up flat). They retail for around $200 and I'm asking $50. You'll have to purchase a mattress for this one, but from what I've found online it will only run you $30-$60, depending on how thick you want the mattress to be. This crib is perfect for a smaller nursery space and appears at ease in both traditional or modern settings.

Classical Music

I love blogging to classical music at night. It's just enough of a distraction, without clouding my mind. My thoughts flow in a way they couldn't during the day and the beautiful combination of strings and piano make me feel calm and peaceful inside.

I'm a huge fan of the French composer Claude Debussy, hence my Debussy-loaded playlist. However, I'm in serious need of branching out and for whatever reason my memory is failing me and I can't remember all the specific pieces I love (there was a particularly compelling Chopin Nocturne I can't for the life of me remember).

I'm hoping you'll share your favorite pieces with me so I can diversify my current list...

Arabesque 1 - Debussy
Gymnopedie No.3 - Erik Satie
Nocturne - Debussy
Reverie - Debussy
Clair de Lune - Debussy
Passepied - Debussy

P.S. If you are also a Satie fan and visit Normandy at some point, make sure you stop by the Maison Satie in Honfleur. The town is absolutely lovely and this small museum provides an atypical museum experience you'll truly enjoy.

This is such a great price for Paige jeans...I like the wash too. The fact that they are about the price of a pair of jeans at the Gap makes them awfully tempting.

Heard

Background: When in Paris last August we stumbled on an adorable toy store on the way to the Luxembourg Gardens from St. Michel Boulevard. The store only offered German and French toys...my favorites! I sent the Husband ahead with the kids and meandered through the store for a few minutes deciding which little offerings to purchase for Christmas gifts. I decided on just a few...this mushroom bank being one of them. My little guy just loves his bank and carries it with him around the house and wherever we run errands (although after a few close calls we've now decided it needs to stay at home or in his carseat). Bottom line...he loves it so.

One day he decides he wants to open his bank but somehow I've misplaced the key...or did it even come with a key? I have no idea :) Regardless, he is intent on opening his bank and investigating his stash. In the car one day he says:

"When we get home can we find a key that opens mushroom banks?"

and then when that doesn't work he asks:

"Can we go to a store that sells mushroom bank keys?"

Coconut Cupcakes & Passionfruit Buttercream

I love coconut and passion fruit and the combination of these two favorites is utter bliss in my book.

I know I spoke about coconut cupcakes here recently, but I hadn't discovered these coconut cupcakes and I must say they are the best I've had yet. I didn't try her frosting recipe because I've tossed all my corn syrup, but the cupcake recipe itself is delicious. I'm convinced it's the usage of coconut milk (I like the Chaokoh brand best).

For these cupcakes I made up my own passionfruit buttercream recipe with softened butter, powdered sugar, and passionfruit puree. I kept adding a little of this and that so I have no recipe to report but I find that buttercreams are often like that anyway. You really just need some basic ingredients and then you taste and add as you please.

To achieve a pretty look without fancy tips or other cake decorating supplies, simply place the frosting in a plastic bag, like a Ziploc. Cut a small hole in the bottom corner--start small and them make it larger if you deem it necessary. Squeeze the frosting out and wrap it around the cupcake, like a snail shell. This very simple technique will make the frosting go on more evenly and look more professional.

Note: Locally you can find these white Chinese takeout boxes at Xpedx for 19 cents each.

Frozen Key Lime Pie

Add this dessert to your top 5...it's incredibly delicious and the "make-ahead" nature of the pie makes it ultra convenient. You will love it. Guaranteed :)

When I take the time to make this, I always double the recipe and make two pies. It's not a lot of extra effort preparation-wise but you end up with double the dessert. And these pies last up to 3 months in the freezer so there isn't a rush to consume...although you may have a difficult time convincing yourself of that once you taste it. I've heard it dubbed "the best key lime pie" by more than a few.

Some notes about this recipe you may want to consider:

1. You'll want to almost double the zest. It's so much better nice 'n tart.

2. Mixing the egg mixture until it's thick and creamy is essential. In the past I haven't mixed it long enough or on a high enough setting and my filling didn't turn out as well.

3. Don't be tempted to buy a ready-made crust. They are expensive and bland. The graham cracker crust takes 10 minutes to make max and isn't difficult at all. Promise. Three ingredients is all it takes folks.

4. Even if I can find the rare key lime, I typically just use regular limes for the filling. I can't imagine it being anymore delicious than it already is despite using conventional limes. I will, however, purchase a few key limes for garnish. They look adorable on top of the cream topping given how miniature they are.

5. Wrap well before placing the pies in the freezer. Consider two or three layers or plastic wrap.

6. Never make this on the day you want to consume it...it won't be set in time. I made this mistake once and the pie wasn't ready to eat despite the fact that it was in the freezer for 6-8 hours. It truly requires an "overnight stay" in your freezer.

Enjoy!

Organizing Tip #22

Use a "catch-all basket" for your living space.

Whether it's a woven basket, a laundry basket, or even a bag--everyone needs one!

I use this basket as mine. When it's downstairs, I throw in things that need to go upstairs. Then I take it upstairs and unload. It typically sits upstairs collecting things that need to go downstairs for a day or so and then when it's full, I take it downstairs to unload. What ends up happening is a constant cycle of cleaning up the clutter. It's one of those things that only takes a couple of minutes per day, literally, yet reaps a huge payoff as you rarely get to the point where you're going nuts with "stuff" everywhere.

If you have children, you'll want to use something they can carry. This basket is lightweight, yet sturdy, and includes two handles on the side that stretch and move easily for even the smallest of hands. Sometimes when the load is light, I ask my children to move the basket and then put away the items together. It takes them less than 5 minutes and keeps them occupied while I finish up dinner or what not.

5 Steps to Realistic Organizing

January is over...the manic organizing frenzy we embark on after the New Year has probably toned down a little for most of us. Or maybe, we're just getting started. Whatever the case may be in your neck of the woods, here are a few things to keep in mind throughout the process to avoid becoming overwhelmed. It's all about expectations baby.

1. Whatever you organize will have to be redone in 6 months (okay, so I'm speaking for myself but I have an inkling it might apply to a few others-wink, wink). Accept it, but don't let it keep you from trying. The way I see it, what's worse...total neglect or constant care? Kudos for any attempts in my book. Life happens, junk happens, and the only way to stay on top of either is to give it a little TLC.

2. There is always something to organize. Always.

3. It's imperative you receive support from other family members to make systems work. I like one suggestion I read in Real Simple awhile back...everyone pretends they are a hurricane for ten minutes a day. This makes it more fun for the kids and gives them motivation to work fast. I kinda want to try that.

4. Even the most organized person needs one dumping ground in my book , whether it be a drawer (my choice!), a cupboard or whatever. That being said, it's good to go through that "dumping ground" every few months so it doesn't become Mt. Everest instead.

5. The most important part of organizing is first eliminating. Getting rid of extra stuff means less to organize, less to clean, and most importantly, less to upkeep. Think of how little people used to live with...and how happy they were. We could all do with a little less ourselves, especially when there are so many others in need. Just a thought...

Recycled Calendar

I couldn't bear to toss my 2008 Snow & Graham calendar...it's too beautiful for such an end. While sitting down to start making Valentines with my daughter, I decided to make them into blank notes. I could always use a few more of those on hand. Gratefully, I still had a few clear vellum envelopes left (I bought them for pennies at a San Francisco tag sale), which showcase the pretty graphics even before the envelope is opened.

So if you have an old calendar sitting around...

Step 1. Detach papers

Step 2: Using a paper cutter, cut the calendar pages into a size barely smaller than the envelope you decide to use for the project.

Step 3: Voila...you're ready for a special delivery.

Bobbi Brown Lipcolor

After a bad haircut this weekend, I had to do something to make myself feel better and resist the urge to don a brown paper bag over my head...permanently. But, I guess that's what I get for walking into a new salon, to a new stylist, and giving him a good amount of creative license. Not the smartest move I've made :)

So what did I do? Purchase a Bobbi Brown lipcolor I've wanted for a few months now. I love her lipcolors--they are beautiful neutrals that don't give you that "painted on" look. They don't taste yucky and they glide on smooth and creamy. So until my hair grows out, this little pick-me-up will have to do.

I'm also impressed with everything I've read about her and thought I'd include her "lifestyle tips" in this post too. All good mantras to abide by...

How to Enlarge Photos on Blogger, Part 3 {Final Version}

Okay, let's hope this is the end of this series :) Blogger, stop changin' things on us!

I'm updating the last post thanks to a helpful comment or two from a few readers (thank you Caroline and Leslie!). The method they shared with me is much easier than the one I previously shared with you. Who doesn't want/need a timesaver?

While in your post, click on "edit Html". Then look for this set of code...it's the code for the picture you just uploaded.

Now delete this section of code--everything circled above. After deleting the indicated code, your html for your picture should look like this:

Now it's time to change the size of your photo. You can choose from s400, s576 or s640 depending on the look you want and the parameters of your blog. Try a few on for size and see what works best for you. See below picture for the section of code you'll want to change during this final step.

All in all this should take you about 30 seconds. Let me know if you have any further questions!
