Etsy Pick of the Week: Papers Edge

• 30 July 2010

For a few years now I've adored these modern, paper-cut silhouettes from Papers Edge. I've spotted them at local boutiques and art markets. However, meeting the artist behind the creations at Evo sealed the deal. She is crazy talented when it comes to using scissors and paper, and is even taking up watercolors. The new, custom family silhouettes she's offering up are nothing short of incredible and these little birthday tags are about the best deal ever.

For Sale: Mid-Century Modern Molded Burke Chairs + Table

• 29 July 2010

My friend Amber is selling a coveted set of 8 mid-century molded Burke side chairs and pedestal table. I've had my eye on this set for a few years now and can't help but think one of you would love it as much as I. Never before have I seen such a large set of identical, vintage designer chairs--it seems like you can only find a couple of these at a time, never in a complete, matching set of 8! I think the seat cushions would be fun to re-cover too...you know...if I actually knew how to do that sort of thing (but I know you do :).

You can view all the details here. Amber's email address is: ambercarlston(at)gmail(dot)com. Good luck!

Kiddo Thank You Notes

My kids have a few thank-you notes to write this week and I can't stop thinking about this excellent archived post about kiddo thank-you notes over at Black Eiffel. I think we'll use these examples as inspiration for our own little notes, based on what we have on hand (these Abstract Expressionist stamps will most certainly come in handy). This is not only a clever way to use up a few hours, but it's a useful way to practice creativity and thoughtfulness. Just make sure those watercolors are washable :)

A Cozy Space for You

• 28 July 2010

Proof that a little paint, flooring and a few furnishings can turn a small, slightly-confined and likely dreary space into a lovely, inspiring place to collect one's thoughts. Rethinking that old shed in your backyard?

Pressing Reset

Have you recently escaped to a remote location, sans cell phone coverage, internet access or even a land line? It’s quite refreshing don't you think? (Even if it’s a lot of work to get out the door). Well, our little family did just that last weekend and I found that taking a step back was not only a lot of fun for my family, but renewing for me personally. Kind of like pressing reset on life and my priorities.

My children enjoyed running around trying to catch squirrels, observing wildlife, hanging out by a fire, and canoeing; all with unkempt hair, soiled t-shirts and sooty faces (I did however make them brush their teeth often, much to their dismay ). It was great to feel so relaxed. Besides sharing part of the experience with dear friends, a highlight for us all centered around a big, lanky moose who kept us company for several hours. It was the most amazing thing to watch—a moose licked the same stump for hours and hours (apparently it was the site of an abandoned salt lick). We ate breakfast near the moose, lunch near the moose, and part of dinner with the moose before it wandered off at dusk. Incredible.

This one is not only full of delicious ingredients, but it’s healthy too. I’ve made several batches over the past 3-4 weeks and have enjoyed eating it on an almost daily basis.

Design Your Own Fabric

• 26 July 2010

Yet another fun project that makes me wish I continued those sewing classes in high school (Mom, you were so right...I now have regrets). My talent in this area resides in the can't-even-sew-on-a-button-properly range; but, I know so many of you rise so far above this level and would love a shot at designing your own fabric. And that is why I mention this fantastic, user-friendly option today :) Think cute throw pillows, cushions, clothing...all designed by you!

Blueberry Muffins

• 22 July 2010

I tried my very first "Pioneer Woman" recipe this past week...I'm sure many of you are wondering what took me so long! Well, I have to say the blueberry muffin recipe I tried was delicious, but a tad too sweet for early in the morning. Do any of you have a fantastic blueberry muffin or bran muffin recipe you really love? I'm craving them both :)

Future Maps

These are, without a doubt, the most stunning world maps I've ever seen. How wonderful to discover a design-conscious mapping company that takes a popular subject and then adds rich, sophisticated color and silk-finished paper. I envision any of these maps being appropriate in a kitchen, living room, play area or a child's room. If you hold the city of London dear to your heart, you must check out these city maps too, especially during the summer sale currently going on through the 25th.

Thanks Marcus for the heads up!

Abstract Landscapes of Katherine Sandoz

• 21 July 2010

One thing I've come to fully appreciate over the years is the value of original art. It doesn't have to be big and expensive, just lovely and original. A day never passes without an appreciative glance towards one of the few pieces I've slowly acquired over the years, as they add such an uplifting vibe to my living space. In the past, I've gone to a lot of effort to save up for a little painting; but, it's all been worth it...through and through.

Katherine Sandoz, a painter and illustrator is one of my new favorite artists, and most recently, a blog sponsor. I'm a huge fan of her abstract landscapes...Huge! I love the colors, the shapes, the cheerful mood they exude...the overall package. I am confident that many-a-designer and also just normal people like me who simply appreciate art and design will be thrilled to make her acquaintance. You can also catch her work in the latest issue of New American Paintings, a prestigious art publication.

Katherine is not only a mother of 2, but holds 3 degrees and lives in the southern, sultry and friendly town of Savannah, Georgia. When she's not off teaching classes in southern France at SCAD Lacoste, she paints daily in a barn her husband kindly renovated as a studio. Sounds pretty dreamy, right? Well, wait until you catch a glimpse of her beautiful paintings.

Fabric Scrap Tags

After a recent dinner at Forage--one of Salt Lake's newest and tastiest restaurants--my friend Rachel and I decided to don our "crafty" hats for a couple of hours. We chose this little fabric scrap tag project from Creature Comforts, which we'd both viewed independently and loved. And it just so happened that between us, we had all the necessary supplies too--including both vintage and new fabric scraps. It's so great when you can make something practical and pretty using things you already have--I love that!

As you can see our tags did not turn out quite like Ez's version, but sometimes that's the way things go with projects and you just have to make peace with what you've created. Next time we will not forget to whip out the pinking shears and will definitely print out those little word tabs as well. Gotta love free downloads.

p.s. I also made additional letterpress tags from my calendar. Click here for the full post and how-to. It's a great way to thoughtfully recycle those letterpress cards you just can't bring yourself to toss (and with good reason!).

How to Make Tin Foil Dinners + a Campout

• 20 July 2010

Last weekend while I attempted to "take it easy", my husband took our 3 children camping down south. I was bummed to miss out on the fun, but camping in one's 3rd trimester + early contractions don't exactly compute. It will be fun to return to this same spot all together as a family at some point...my kids apparently had a great time romping through caves with a Jr. Ranger, climbing trees, collecting rocks and of course digging in dirt.

Before the family took off with the teardrop trailer in tow, I helped my husband throw together some tin foil dinners. Boy those dinners taste like heaven when you're camping. Add in a crackling fire and beautiful setting and you have yourself one memorable meal. Not only are tin foil dinners simple to make, but they are easy to cook as well. Today over at Zupas I am interrupting my series on Healthy Breakfasts with this easy-to-understand tutorial on making delicious tin foil dinners. With camping season in full swing, I want to make sure I share this info with you as soon as I can!

Click here to view the tutorial, complete with lots of visuals to help you create your own bundles of goodness for your next outdoor adventure :)

For Sale: My Home

• 19 July 2010

Friends, our home is for sale and I would love to pass it along to one of my lovely readers (or one of your lovely friends or relatives!). If you would like to move into a nice, almost-new home on Salt Lake's east side, please have your agent contact my husband at brubakerhouse@gmail.com.

To view a tour of the home's interior, click here.

Top 7 reasons I love this home:

1. Crazy amounts of natural light thanks to a lot of south side facing windows. It's pure heaven year round.

2. Being so close to the mountains and looking at them while in the kitchen, outside, in my kids' rooms, or in my bathroom.

3. The location is phenomenal--10 minutes from downtown, no lights between here and the airport, 5 minutes to Millcreek canyon, and smack dab next to an elementary school. Yes, my children have the luxury of walking safely to school each day in less than a minute.

4. Our sweet neighbors. We all come from different walks of life but everyone is kind, considerate, friendly and helpful. There is a great sense of community.

5. Typically you don't hear the words "diverse" and "east side" very often in Salt Lake, but our neighborhood is a bit of an anomaly. We love and appreciate this aspect so much.

6. The floor plan. It's perfect. And we'd duplicate it again in a heartbeat. It flows nicely and provides just the right amount of space.

7. The yard. It's been a real labor of love as we've taken the time to do many time-consuming landscaping projects to make it beautiful. Watching it mature is very rewarding and it's also an excellent place to entertain.

P.S. Sending this post to a friend is easy peasy. Simply click on the envelope option below. Thanks!

Italian Striped Umbrellas

Now these are gorgeous. Umbrella maker Maglia Francesco began making umbrellas in Italy at the tender age of 14, before going on to start his own company in the mid-1850's. They've been an icon ever since. While they don't boast a cheap sticker price normally, they are currently on sale. I am officially tempted and could possibly feel inspired to fumble my way through "Singin' in the Rain" with this in tow. Plus, one could argue they could be used in self-defense...check out that lovely, hardwood point :)

Baby Update + Maternity Photos

• 16 July 2010

A few of you requested a baby update...here it goes:

Around 26.5 weeks I went in for an additional ultrasound and during the procedure they discovered the umbilical cord was wrapped around my baby's neck 2 times. Needless to say I was extremely worried. So, for the past 3 weeks I've visited a high-risk pregnancy office for thrice weekly non-stress tests, which is an ironic term for something so stressful if you ask me. The good news is that so far the baby looks great and I am feeling more calm about the situation. They are even reducing my stress tests to twice weekly instead. The bad news is that I'm so worried about everything that I'm starting to have contractions...even while lying down during these NST's. So now I'm working on "taking it easy", whatever that means. Never a dull moment as a mother I tell ya!

On a lighter note, I asked Justin Hackworth to take some maternity photos for me this year. I've never had professional images taken while pregnant, and thought it would be a great idea; that is, until it came down to the wire. I started creating excuses in my mind as to why I should cancel--I felt too big, I didn't have a cute dress from Anthropologie to wear, I didn't like my hair (silly me...a haircut fixed that right up!) and let's be honest, everything feels overwhelming when you are in that third trimester. But, I did it anyway...and I am so very glad we made it happen. These images Justin shot are priceless and there is no doubt in my mind I will be more than grateful for these images down the road, as they document an important part of my personal history as a mother. As an added bonus I scheduled the session to take place when my husband was out-of-town so I could surprise him...I highly recommend this scenario :)

You can take a peek here if you'd like.

Freezing Fresh Pesto

• 15 July 2010

Hoping to head to the farmer's market again this Saturday so I can pick up a container of fresh pesto from Italian vendor M.C. Rossi (the pistachio version is amazing with a slab of country bread fyi). If I can't use it up quickly, I am going to put to use this easy storage tip from Donna Hay so I can enjoy its goodness when out-of-season as well.

How many of you make your own pesto? Which recipes do you use with it? My favorite to date is Baked Ziti with Spinach + Tomatoes. It's always a hit!

Evo 10 Food Workshop + a Scrumptious Salad

• 14 July 2010

Although Evo '10 in its entirety was outstanding, my favorite session was the Food Workshop--I'm certain that comes as no surprise :) A true highlight was meeting and dining with Helen of Tartelette. She is not only a humble, friendly and interesting person, but a fabulous cook and talented photographer to boot...oh and she's French :) If you enjoy food, do yourself a favor and jump over to her blog.

My favorite course was the Chanterelle Mushroom and Mountain Berry Salad. I was a bit surprised how much I loved this salad, as I'm not typically a fan of mixing "sweet" and "savory" so heavily. But, this was delicious, and certainly a recipe worth repeating. You'll find the salad dressing makes more than you'll need, but keep it on hand to toss with mixed greens later in the week. Homemade salad dressing keeps for about 1 week in the fridge so you could even make it ahead of time to save an extra step. Use a mason jar for the dressing, if you have one on hand; if you don't, use a sippy cup :)

Warming up to Purple

I am very much warming up to purple accents, which at one point I wouldn't even consider. This Parisian living room featured in Elle Decor a few months ago was the turning point for me. What a vibrant yet tasteful space! I'd love to hear about your favorite ways to accent with color (if you have an image...send me a link!). I know you have some good ideas up your sleeve.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas: No. 2

• 13 July 2010

I'm sharing the second post in a series on healthy breakfast options over at Zupas today. Read today's idea, as well as part 1 here. Classic Children's Magazines

• 12 July 2010

Back issues of Martha Stewart's Kids and Baby magazines are like gold to me. Within their pages are copious amounts of inspiration...some of which could be easily applied to non-baby events too. You can find them on ebay every now and again (right now it appears there are a handful of issues available!).

Also, Donna Hay just this year's kid's issue and I'm dying to get my hands on it. You can order it from Australia here, as well as other back issues. If you can swallow the shipping costs, this is your best bet. I'm hoping that my local B&N picks it up at some point, although I wonder if that's even a possibility. Has anyone seen it yet? Any tips?

p.s. the winner of the $100 gift certificate to Shabby Apple was announced today. Did you win? Scroll down to see...

La Maisonnette 2011

Just a heads up...we opened up the 2011 schedule at La Maisonnette! You can view all the details and calendar here.

A few notes I'd like to share regarding La Maisonnette:

1. Many thanks to the bloggers who've stayed here and taken such good care of our cottage. We appreciate you so much and are thrilled to share this part of our life with you. Our manager says that almost without exception, that blog reader guests have been clean, respectful, friendly and interesting. Merci beaucoup many times over!

2. I love staring at this image above...it captures the magic of Beynac so perfectly and also depicts the grassy hill next to the cottage in such a lovely way. When there a few months ago checking up on things, the Chief Architect of France (the same person who has to approve anything we do to the exterior of our cottage) ordered a fence erected along the cobblestone path until the restoration on a portion of the 850-year-old castle wall is completed. We are hoping its restoration lasts the same amount of time as ours :)

3. Nicole and Candace are hosting a photography retreat in Beynac this week. It's been fun to share with them our favorite little spots. I hope everyone loves the area (and foie gras) as much as we do.

4. Here's a fun Rick Steves video that gives a bit of history on the village and surrounding area. He is a big fan too!

Clothespin Dolls

• 09 July 2010

This week I wish I lived in Eastern Washington so my little ones could attend Danyelle's Craft Camp. I'm not a big crafter--I'm very selective on how I choose my projects due to limited skills and time/supply constraints--but this woman knows how to do them right. She chooses simple, useful projects that are visually appealing and a lot of fun. Basically, she's my favorite "crafty" gal.

How to Dry Out a Narrow-Spouted Bottle

I have a bunch of narrow-spouted, glass bottles that are really tricky to dry out (these ones from IKEA being amongst my favorites) thanks to the narrow opening up top. So while they look good, they aren't the easiest to clean. Thankfully, I've been diligent about putting to use a little trick I read about in Living several years ago. And all it involves is one paper towel (Joslyn, you may have to re-institute a roll of paper towels for this trick!). Here is how you do it...it's really easy:

1. Take one paper towel and lay flat on the counter.

2. Roll the towel into a narrow funnel, starting at one corner and moving towards the opposite corner.

3. Place carefully inside the bottle for about a day (depending on your climate). Rotate if needed.

You'll be amazed at how well the paper towel wicks away the little droplets of moisture inside the bottle that you cannot get to any other way!

Pretty Blue Bicycle

J'adore this pretty, blue, European-inspired bicycle by Linus. You know by just looking at it and reading about, that it would be something that would last 10+ years. I swear I'm going to become a bicycle-ridin' mama one of these days!

Menu of the Week

• 08 July 2010

I've had to cut down significantly on my "to-do" list as of late; however, I'm not willing to give up good food. My family needs it, my baby needs it, and therefore I need it :)

Grown Up Mac n' Cheese - everyone in the family loved this dish. I'll admit I was a bit skeptical of a GH recipe, but when I saw the words, "fontina", "pancetta" and "Pecorino", I figured it must be good...and it was.

Grilled Fish Tacos - yes, we are making these again :)

Spaghetti with Quick Meat Sauce - I doubled the recipe, but shaved off 1/2 lb. beef. Thought it very balanced this way.

Parmesan Toasts with Asparagus, Egg & Prosciutto - an easy dinner recipe to be sure, but also works as a brunch recipe too. We had a few leftover toasts with just parm and prosciutto, so we saved them in the fridge for snacks the next day.

Easy Cassoulet - still messing around with this recipe, but love the idea of quick-to-make cassoulet. It's an excellent French dish, but I'm not up for making it the traditional way on a weeknight.

View additional menu of the week ideas here.

Welcome Stella & Dot + a Sale

• 07 July 2010

Is this jewelry from Stella & Dot gorgeous, or what? After perusing the site of new sponsor, Stella & Dot, I can honestly say there is something featured for every taste and budget. If you like delicate, they have delicate; if you like bold, colorful, j.crew-esque pieces, they have that too (this gold + green pair have me swooning--they would be perfect with a tunic from Rikshaw). It's very apparent why magazines like InStyle and Oprah have featured them in the past. You'll be interested in knowing it's a great time to discover a new, fabulous jewelry source as they are offering an additional 20% off all listed sale items through Friday, July 9th!

As an added perk, if you have any style or technical questions, feel free to contact stylist Michelle John. She's a stylish gal herself (love her cobalt blue top) and is more than happy to offer free assistance or advice. See if anything strikes your fancy here.

Forever 21 Maternity

I'm so glad I popped onto the blog, Uber Chic for Cheap, this week. Madeline shared some fun news--Forever 21 recently launched a maternity line! Since this is my last pregnancy, I am not interested in purchasing additional {and often expensive} maternity clothes, even though I'm admittedly very, very tired of what I've been wearing day-in and day-out. But a $10 top is completely justifiable, no?

You can purchase the maternity line online (it's pretty limited right now, but I'm sure they'll expand), but I noticed that many sizes were sold out already. However, it's possible that your local store may carry the line in-house as select stores are receiving the full maternity line alongside their regular stock. You may want to give your local store a ring before heading down there if you're itching to see the pieces in person. Locals: the South Towne location is where I shopped this morning; Gateway does not carry maternity at this time.

If you're interested in a few notes regarding sizing, this is what I observed:

1. Tops ran true to pre-pregnancy size.

2. Bottoms ran a bit small; in the jeans I went 2-3 sizes up from my pre-pregnancy size. In the leggings I could've easily worn my pre-pregnancy size--they fit just fine; however, I opted for a size up in case I accidentally threw them in the dryer. Plus, I know there is still some expansion in the works :)

p.s. thanks to all your wonderful suggestions, here are a few new maternity favorites I've discovered this time around--Shade wrap half-sleeve tops and Old Navy fold-over skirts. I'm continuing to love old Babystyle tops (although they are out-of-business, you can still find pieces on Ebay), a few pieces from Liz Lange's line for Target and black matte jersey dresses from Gap and Old Navy.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas: No. 1

• 06 July 2010

We've all heard it before...breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But do you know why? I'll admit that upon some research, I learned some interesting facts about breakfast that simply confirmed what my body tells me, which is that I need breakfast and I can't function without it.

Today, I'm kicking off a little series about healthy breakfast ideas over at the Zupas blog today. If you find yourself in a rut with your breakfast routine, you might appreciate a few new ideas, recipes and some interesting facts about this delicious meal. Plus, I know I'm not the only one out there who enjoys breakfast food for dinner, so perhaps you could count this as a "dinner" post too :)

Shabby Apple Super Summer GIVEAWAY

• 05 July 2010

Alrighty then...the winner of the $100 gift card to Shabby Apple has been chosen via random.org. Congratulations!

I love a great dress...I really, really do. It's easy, it's feminine, and requires less shopping than other ensembles. I too enjoy a pretty skirt, blouse and cardi outfit, but sometimes the combination of the 3 becomes pricey or just unattainable because you can't find the right coordinating piece. So a dress is a fantastic route you see!

Shabby Apple sent me one of their cute, striped dresses from their new Paris-inspired Oh La La Collection and it's darling (I have touched on the subject of stripes just a little bit lately...). I thought maybe you would love to treat yourself to a pretty dress {or two} from Shabby Apple as well. Am I right?! If the answer is "oui" then read on. For today's giveaway, Shabby Apple would like to offer one lucky reader a $100 Gift Certificate. You are welcome to use it on anything from their site--women's dresses, accessories, children's frocks or pre-teen styles that you both will approve of--you pick!

Here are some of my recommendations, but have a ball exploring Shabby Apple for yourself---there are so many fantastic choices that I find myself having a difficult time choosing just a few favorites. What would you spend your $100 Gift Certificate on?

Oh La La dress - simple, nautical, flattering (love those front pockets too!)

Tuileries dress - we could all use a cheerful, yellow dress in our wardrobe. Right now all I can think about are those ruffles and the cute jewelry you could wear with this fun color.

Bethesda Fountain - I'd like to think Audrey Hepburn would've loved the over sized bow on this classic, poplin dress.

Getting married? Look at all the pretty colors this Anne and Andy Bridesmaid dress comes in...and think how happy your bridesmaids would be with a dress they could actually wear again!

Alright, you know the drill! Leave a comment and be sure to peruse the guidelines listed below.

Giveaway Guidelines:

- You have 5 days to enter this giveaway (closes Friday, July 9th at midnight).
- Make 1 comment on this post to enter.
- Anonymous comments will be ignored so make sure we know who you are!
- The winners will be chosen via random.org and announced on Monday, July 12th at the top of this post.

Pizza Party

I loved these images from Casey's Supper Party over at the K.I.D. Collective. What a clever use of kraft brown wrapping paper. It's so simple it's brilliant! It kind of makes me want to host another pizza party...it's been years since we've done something like that. And when we do, we'll be using this easy, delicious pizza dough recipe.

What are your favorite toppings/combinations?

Love the clean, simple lines of this boy's room. If you have white walls in your living space, this is a fantastic example of using pops of color to create a cozy, fun space to play and sleep. I'm particularly enamored with the choice of toys and wall adornment :)
